Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Part one of today's progress. We had to take a break due to a music video being filmed, of all things, in the museum. Leeann got the leading edge and under the nose painted, as well as the right side of the windscreen. I finished the forward belly pan, and it's now over in another shop, awaiting fabric. Also framed up the left side of the windscreen, so when we go back this evening, we'll get that done. We also cut out the skin for the left leading edge, might get that on tonight, or worst case tomorrow AM. That will leave the rest of the vinyl markings, and the small aft belly pan to complete, along with installing landing lights, lenses, nav lights, exhaust (being worked on by the local Chev dealer), and the antenna/mast. As soon as I've got the rear belly pan done, in a day or two, I'm essentially done with fabrication, and I can pack up the shop, do a big clean up, and relax until it's time to re-assemble the bird!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

I'll have to check it out, haven't heard of it before. Clive DuCros built and flew an all wood 100% scale Spitfire, on a modified Jaguar V-12. But, that's a whole different level of project! Here's todays shots, including my dream, after 3 years, of sitting in the Hurricane! We got the left wing leading edge done, Leeann got the first coat of paint on it. I cut and fit the windshield, and the left side window, got them held in place with clear silicone. Also managed a bit of work on the aft belly pan behind the tail wheel. Leeann meanwhile, was in the fabric shop with our AME John Webber, learning how to apply fabric to the ailerons. All in all, a great and productive day!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

No pics today, but made it over to the museum in spite of our "snowfall warning". Yee haw, barely a wimper for a BC mountain boy. Anyways, trim tabs are now installed on the rudder and elevators, and the windscreen is completed! Just the aft belly pan to go, and that about wraps up this project.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Shots of the past two day's worth of work. Completed installation of rudder and elevator trim tabs yesterday. Also finished the windscreen fabrication, installed all the lexan, and painted the outer framework. Inner framework I'll paint tomorrow. Today, I fabricated and installed the LG brace doors, and Leeann got them painted up, as well as finishing the painting of the center wing section leading edges. While she painted, I worked on installing the sub-fin ahead of the tail wheel, and got most of the fabrication done of the belly pan behind the tail wheel. Should have it finished, and ready for paint tomorrow, which will conclude fabrication on the project. We took a break from the tedious stuff, and before heading home for supper, got the graphics done on the right side of the fuselage! Tomorrow, Leeann will be working with John Webber, the museum's AME, on more fabric work for the ailerons and forward belly pan. I'll finish the rear belly pan, and then start a major cleanup, and we can start removing all my bigger power tools. We have one roundel to place on the left wing, waiting on the exhaust, and the aircraft serial #, and some small placards. Other than that, we'll have to install the ailerons and flaps to the outer wing sections, rig the antenna, finish the forward wing fillets, and we're out of excuses, she'll be done and ready to hang up!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Well, the time has come. The last of the woodworking was finished today. Now it's detail work, some fabric work, and painting, and this project will be done. Leeann and John are finishing off the fabric work on the ailerons and forward belly pan. They'll be done in a few days, and then we'll get them installed. Some paintwork to do on the inside canopy frames, permanently attach the seat, forward wing fillets, install landing lights and nav lights, and that's it. She'll await the day for the grand unveiling.
