Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

My goodness, it takes two years (or more!) for me to assemble a 40 size kit, with all the pieces already cut for me. I cannot imagine how many centurys I would take to do a project like this!
I have put seeing this Hurricane on my bucket list; and I definitely hope to meet you folk as you head west. Just sing out when you are in the general area!

(Damn! That looks fine!)

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Thanks so much, it was certainly a challenge, but a really great one. I learned a lot, and fortunately surprised myself a few times, especially with the spinner and prop! When we pull pin, and hit the road, we'll be planning on taking our time, and meeting as many of the folks that we've chatted with over the years, and flying lots as well!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Yup, March 2012, I opened my big yap, and assured the Curator, Christine Hines, that a full sized replica Hurricane for 10K was possible. Then we waited for the Mick Reeve kit, think I got that summer 2012, and spent most of the year stocking up on wood, and starting to cut blanks for ribs, bulkheads, etc. Wow. It's been quite the run!

Speaking of which- How did you come in on the 10K budget?

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

About $1000 under budget! We did really good with that. That was without trying to get any bulk purchase deals, or any business sponsorship. Shows what you can do with a ton of imagination! lol

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Good progress this weekend, last week was very busy work wise, so didn't get a lot done during the week. Managed to get the upper half of both forward wing fillets done, using pink foam as a base, shaped and sanded, then epoxy thickened as much as possible with wood flour for filler. As soon as the filler got tacky, I then glassed both upper fillets. The tail is now jacked up on blocks, in order for me to work on the fillets around the tail, I have to re-attach the horizontal and vertical stabs. That would block people from walking around the Hurricane, which we can't do. So, two of us lifted the tail, and another helper put the blocking in. We also moved the wing onto a set of Sea King fuselage stands, on rollers. That will allow me to finish the last of the work on the wings, and we can then roll them into position when it comes time for final assembly. With the wings on the stands, it was quick work to attach the outer flaps. Leeann should have one aileron completely painted tomorrow, and the second in a couple of days. The forward belly pan is ready to attach to the fuselage, I just need to finish securing the pilot's seat first, then we can close things up.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Lots of work done today, Leeann got the right aileron painted, and we fitted the left aileron to the wing. She also fabricated foam molds for the nav lights. Jean-guy helped me get the last, and largest belly pan fastened to the fuselage, and then did some fastening on the tail fillets, as well as framing up the landing lights. I finished the glassing on the left wing fillet, so will get it sanded, filled and primed tomorrow, and finished the fabrication and rough shaping of the right bottom wing fillet, I'll finish that tomorrow and get it glassed. Hopefully I can finish the tail fillets as well tomorrow. 99% complete!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Today's progress, left wing fillet is done, and painting in progress. Right fillet has the last bit of fibreglassing done, and will get sanded, filled, and ready for paint tomorrow. Tail fillets are coming along, have to cut the forward top fillet for the left side, and get that on, 3 smaller pieces still to go, they'll take a lot of shaping, but looking forward to learning the process of taking a flat piece of aluminum, and making a compound curve from it.
