One panel is now on the front. Still a fair bit of hand plane work to taper the other side. Hopefully I'll get that done today. Still fighting this miserable cold, so energy levels aren't what they should be!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Top of the wing is fully sheeted! Finally. Tomorrow I'll stand it up, go over all the glue joints on the inside, then finish wheel wells. Soon as I can get it hauled to the museum, I can start setting up the jig for the fuse.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

How is the leading edge to be done? Hopefully not a block of wood that will need to be sanded to shape!?

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

I'm pretty positive that the 1/8th Baltic birch, with a liberal application of Windex, will wrap around. I've got the nose sections cut already, so will attach those, then wrap ply around. I've already left 6 CM's on the main box spar to attach the ply. We'll do a dry run, later on, and if that works, we're in business. If that doesn't work, then it will be two layers of 1/16th aircraft ply, laminated. Bit more costly, but budget wise, we're well under the funds avail for the project. The museum has $10,000 allocated from a single donation, which is way more than I need for the basic airframe.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Sorry, I don't understand, what is 6 CMs?

I do think the 1/8 should work and look good, how was it done on the real plane? Aluminum riveted to formers?

If I come out east next summer to visit the in-laws I really would like to see...!

You are doing great work!

Rick

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

lol distance, as in 60mm. I'm hoping the 1/8th will do the trick, it's pretty flexible. Baltic birch is wonderful to work with, and very cheap. A 5X5 sheet of 1/8th is around $20, and it's perfect for ply ribs, bulkheads, etc for RC, I use it a lot. Thicknesses range up to 1 in, so all sorts of variety. By the summer, the airframe should be completely framed up, and sitting at the Shearwater Aviation museum!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Wing is back upright, got the shop cleaned up tonight, and did some of the fillets. Flying late tomorrow night, so won't get much done. Hope to have enough time to get it completed enough to ship out by the end of the week though. I really want to start the fuse!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Got half the framing up for the panels on the lower wing. There are two large panels for accessing the wing fuel tanks, and various access panels for controls, etc.
