Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Tell me about it. Good thing we've got a big wood stove, I've got enough shavings to start fires nightly for the winter! Managed to get two more panels cut this morning, while sucking back my coffee. They are now tacked into place on the underside of the wing, behind the wheel wells. I've got to mark out the access hatches, and mounting point for the radiator, then cut as required, and attach the permanent parts. My neighbor, who's worked many years on aircraft, and at the museum at the Halifax Stanfield Airport, had a great suggestion for all the access panel screws. Small drywall screws are a perfect match! I'll have to get the right sized counter sink. Once the hatches are glassed, then I'll counter sink all the screw holes, and they'll look as real as we can make them.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Today, it's a run to Home Depot, need a few more things, then the last two sheets will be attached, marked, and cut out for the wheel well area! Hopefully by the end of the day, this section will be done, I can get it moved outside, and covered, until I deliver it hopefully on Monday. Then the fun part, the fuselage.

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

You are getting slow in your old age, Dave. A year ago that wing would have been done by now

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

Used to be, when I got asked to do crazy projects like this, I'd get time off. Not really an option with my current position, it's actually eating up a considerable more time than a typical 8hr day. That's my defense, and I'm sticking to it!

Having said that, voila, all the panels for the bottom of the wing except one small one, are all done. The two panels around the wheel wells are tacked in place, glued, and drying. The upper two panels were access hatches on the real plane. So, I'm using a #6 countersink, pre-drilling, and then using #6 X 1 inch drywall screws to fasten all the panels in place! Perfect size, taper, and Phillips head screw.

Here's a shot of the flush fasteners for the access hatches.

Luck? What's luck? It's not luck at all. Called being too stupid to realize what I've gotten myself into! lol Seriously, thanks for the support. It's a bit intimidating at times!

Re: Really Giant Scale Hurricane

400 screws later, all the wing access panels are done. Radiator will be built later, for now, it's some sanding, cleanup, few bits and pieces, then on to the fuselage.
