End of an era at WHAM!

Well, today was the day. A stalwart group of fliers braved a biting north wind and freezing temperatures to clear out our flying field. Our landlady cancelled our lease after 20+ years of fun and frolic due to an intransigent neighbor that moved in a few years ago, just down the road. We bent over backwards to placate him to no avail. He finally found that we had never applied for a "conditional land use permit" for our activities on what is zoned as agricultural land, and he and his lawyer (A thousand poxes on him) threatened our land lady with a huge lawsuit, and she folded.
There is no sense "looking up the dead horse's rear" as an oldtimer would say, what's done is done, and we have to move on. I'm sure the bitter wind was not the only reason for the occasional teary eye this morning.
On the bright side, the club execs have been pounding the back roads looking for a new home, and we may be in luck. A location has been found, with an agreeable landowner, and all we have to do is get past the local Council meeting on April 3rd,and we can start rebuilding. Well done chaps!
Another bright note, other clubs in the area have really stepped up and invited us to use their fields, as long as we are members of WHAM, Winnipeg Radio Control Club, and Big Sky Fliers, to name a couple. Thanks guys your hospitality is appreciated.
So, it's onward and upward, and with any luck, we could be back in business in a year or so.

Re: End of an era at WHAM!

1. Sorry about the loss of flying field, some people resent others enjoying themselves
2. Congratulations on hopefully finding another location for your use.
3. Congratulations to the surrounding clubs that have offered their facilities in the intrum.
Our club assisted an adjacent club in the same manner when they were forced to move, and it is greatly appreciated by all who participate.

Hope you are up and running quickly.....good luck in your efforts

Re: End of an era at WHAM!

I hope the new location comes through for you. It is difficult to find land! The CRAMS club in Calgary will be moving at the end of April from land that we leased from the City for many years. They now have other uses for it and as well, a major road was just placed a few hundred metres from us. It took a lot of looking but we also have found an agreeable landowner and are in the process of lining up all of the ducks. We are getting the Development Permit in the hopes of avoiding what you just went through! BTW don't blame the lawyer! We are not all bad

Re: End of an era at WHAM!

That's a real shame. One of local clubs lost their lease this year due to city re-zoning...it's definitely challenging to find a new home. Hopefully your new digs can be built up to give you guys something even better.

I hope it all ends well for your group. Some people will never be happy. I do believe what goes around, comes around.

Re: End of an era at WHAM!

Sorry to hear about the loss. If it helps, you guys are always welcome at Kenora's field. Come down for the weekend , fish, fly etc. We have tons of room to park RV's.

Hope you get your new field soon.

Re: End of an era at WHAM!

All the best on your endeavours. Here's hoping all goes according to your plan.

One of my clubs (I belong to three) was booted from their location a few years ago because the site's insurance company did not want us there. We had located an alternate site, and now that it is developed almost to where we want it.... it is being converted to a solar farm! Solar panels will be all over our field in a year if all goes to plan. Again we are hunting for a suitable location.

Crazy as it sounds, the drought in Texas is making it harder for us. The drought in Texas has cut into their ability to produce corn, so corn has tripled in price in three years, now local landowners would rather raise corn than let their land be used for RC flying.
