Hi Al,

Being comfortable hitting the throttle hold and flying autos will help you fine tune your engine once you have it set up fairly close to where it needs to be.

When you're comfortable that your mixtures are close and your engine is making good power, fly it around and load it up - a couple or three big loops in a row to make the engine really work and get it hot.

Hit your throttle hold. The engine should come down to a nice idle smartly and smoothly. If it hangs and takes a while to come to an idle you can richen the high needle a click or two and try again until you get a nice smooth transition. Conversely if it comes to an idle nicely right away, you can lean a click or two each time until it hangs a bit then back the needle off to where you get a nice smooth transition from full power to idle.

This will let you tune for (essentially), max power for sport flying without being in danger of cooking your engine.

It's a quick and easy way to check that your engine is happy and you can do it every time you're out flying if you like. So as the seasons and weather change, you can keep up with your engine tune and eliminate the guess work and worry.

Hope this helps.

Re: Throttle hold question

Thanks, Mark!

I'll use that once I get better at this. I won't be ready to do loops with my Preddy for a while yet.
