I recently had my 450 inverted when I lost it and damaged a LiPo when it was ejected. It burst into flames and burnt with gusto. That was one cell of three. Then to be safe, I punched a nail through the other cells and they also burst into flames. This was a one-year old pack.

Re: Punctured LiPo, no smoke?

I have nicked several of my packs over the last year, and when I placed them in an steel ammo can for safety....Nothing. I had this happen to at least 5 batteries.

BUT, last weekend, a fellow RC'er had his plane ready to fly (Charged Lipo) when we heard a "Pop" that came out of the fuselage. Before he could get the canopy off, smoke was coming from the fuse and in less than a minute, the plane was fully ablaze, the lipo blew fire about 3' out the side of the plane. Plane destroyed. Lipo destroyed.

The only thing we could figure was he might have punctured the battery when he installed it into the plane. VERY SCARY!!!!
