DLE 20 - tuning

I've got the DLE 20 in my Pulse 125 turning a 16 x 8 Xoar prop. I've got some numbers but I think they're a little low, so I'd appreciate a second (third, fourth etc) opinion:

RPM @ WOT: ~7500
Static thrust: 11.75 lbs

Here's a clip of the throttle response.

+ YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

The first time I started the plane it stuttered when the throttle was opened and sometimes quit at full throttle. Per the DLE manual I opened up the High adjustment screw on the carb about 1/8 turn and it improved. If I open it too much further it starts to miss, which I assume means too rich.

So, the questions.

1. The manual specifies 2.5 HP @ 9000 RPM. I am running a recommended prop size. Should I expect 9000 RPM?
2. I've seen other reports of the static thrust at 13-14 lbs... is 11.75 low enough to cause concern?
3. I've backed off the idle to about 2000 RPM, but it's pretty shaky at that setting. Is this a good idle speed?

Re: DLE 20 - tuning

Don't expect max RPM on a NEW engine. It will be tight and the rings won't be seated.

Make sure to run a couple tanks of fuel through it on the ground. I have a DLE30 that just had it' 10th tank of fuel through it, now it's starting to run like a champ.

Would have been a good idea to run it on a stand before the engine was mounted on the plane. This allows you to keep an eye on the temperture, RPM..... and doesn't shake the snot out of your airframe.

Re: DLE 20 - tuning

I think once it's broken in (2-5 gallons) those numbers will improve.
I had a thread in (large engines) about carb tuning. I was given great info there.

It's one of those things that you need to develop an ear for. Patience is a virtue, and trust me sometimes "less" is "more".

I believe I posted the link to the walbro site in the previosly mentioned thread.

By the look of the video, I wouldn't mess with it. Just be sure it isn't too lean!

Re: DLE 20 - tuning

Hi I have one in a 1/4 scale Spacewalker. Running a Master Airscrew wooden 16x 6 getting about 8200 It pulls 11.5 lbs tons of power for this model. It seems to run best at stock jet settings 1.5 H and 1.1 low I had trouble this spring and it wouldn't rev up from a fast idle. eventually it wouln't run at all and it turnd out the magnetic sensor was defective. after replacing it runs as last year throttle response is instant.

Re: DLE 20 - tuning

Throttle response sounds fine but try letting it idle for 30 seconds then see if she bogs. If so your rich on the low end. I can let my DLE's idle for minutes and they rev up instant with the stick. If you need to lean the low end you might need to richen the high end. Nice tan plug is what your after.

Re: DLE 20 - tuning

The max HP is at the 9000 rpm. Running rpm is much lower than that. Probably between 7500 and 8000 rpm If you had HP /torque graph it would be about half way in between. As said above, plug colour is the best indicator of proper mixture. Try for a tan colour. At idle, if it's spitting black oil on the bottom of the fuse. it's too rich.
Tried for my kamikazi pilots licence. Flunked the test.

Re: DLE 20 - tuning

I have a DLE 30 and have tons of power but right from the first start (I have had about 15-20 flights) it has spit black oil onto the bottom of fuse. I have made no adjustments because I felt that slightly rich might be good during the break-in phase. Also, the engine idles beautifully and the transition from low to high is perfect so I thought it best to leave good enough alone at least for a while. Would be interested in your comments re. my strategy. . . Cheers - John M.

Re: DLE 20 - tuning

17/6 prop is the best prop for this engine
i have 2 to 3 gal through the 3 of mine and i am getting 8300 to 8500 out of mine
also make sure you run it 32/1 for oil any less and you will kill it
