Fixing a Futaba FP-T8SGA-P Transmitter

Hi Guys,

I have an old Futaba FP-T8SGA-P transmitter which has a broken Power Indicator meter screen and also several switches. I have been looking to find another transmitter to replace this one, or to use for spares. I have posted an add in the classifieds.

My question for this section of the forum, has anyone ever had one of these units apart before? I am wondering if the meter is a sealed unit and if I would have to replace the whole meter, or if I can just replace the glass? Also never had to replace the switches until now, so again, wondering how hard they are to replace on this model transmitter.

I have attached a few pics to show what I am talking about!

Any help would really be appreciated!

Re: Fixing a Futaba FP-T8SGA-P Transmitter

Andy, I'm quite sure meters like that are still in use and so a spare should be available - the meter is a complete little unit with two connections, fixed in the Tx in different ways, none impossible to undo, and a new movement put in it's place. The whole little meter movement is sealed in a clear molding.
The switches are just as much a Futaba spare I'm sure, and I would start with an E-Mail to the Futaba site; they do answer but are not always that helpful, and you can also contact Radio South and ask them, giving the Tx model number and the particular function of the switch you'd need as they are different types. Some careful soldering would be required.
Google the names I have given you here for info on them.
Both replacement jobs are very fiddly to do so ask Radio South for a non-binding ball-park estimate and see.
They didn't carry the spares I needed for an old transmitter but were quick to respond.
PM me for more info if you like.

Re: Fixing a Futaba FP-T8SGA-P Transmitter

Hi Spitball,

Thanks for your reply!! I actually sent Radio South an email, looks like they might have a spare meter in stock, just waiting to hear back on a price! I also contacted Futaba about the switches but they told me they don't do them anymore.... but I am sure some of the other transmitters have the same switches.

I've been trying to find a couple of other transmitters so I can swap about all the parts I need, and also have other spare parts from the units. No such luck yet though.

Thanks again!

Thumbs up Re: Fixing a Futaba FP-T8SGA-P Transmitter

I have searched for Futaba Tx switches also. Seeing what Radio South had listed (some in stock & some not) I used the catalogue # from radio South's listing (eg: HSP55175) in the "detail" column and searched the Great Hobbies & Hobby Wholesale website. Several items like these are difficult to find in the "electronic parts" catagory, but they are usually found if you do a "search" on these websites.

Looking at the switches inside the transmitters, I see they are quite common to several different radios. Mostly what I have done is select the type of switch needed and use the closest match ---------- short handle, long handle, 2 position, 3 position, maintained or spring return, etc..... 98% of what's used have only 3 pins to solder a wire. Many older radios (Futaba, Hitec, JR, etc...) probably use the same switches.

I have found just about everything I've needed this way and once I find it, I usually buy a spare(s) for the most common applications. The long handle/bat operated switches seem to be the easiest to get whacked off or bent.

I hope this may be of some help if Radio South can't supply/repair all the switches needed. Most are available, but it's usually a matter of who has them & how long you have to wait for parts.

Thanks for the detailed reply, it definitely looks like Radio South are my best bet for obtaining these items!

Here's hoping I can get a few fully functional units back up and running again soon.
