While I concur with almost all of your statements Howie, I fear someone might infer there is no danger in undamaged lipos. I have personally observed a previously undamaged lipo spew magic white smoke and then considerable flame. It was caught at the venting stage and tossed from the clubhouse onto the lawn where the pyrotechnics continued. If left on the bench, unattended, the results could have been very different. The cause was allowing a semi-smart charger to read a fully charged 3S as a depleted 4S. It was human error but the caveat that I want to emphasize is that human error is always available for distribution! Following common sense charging practices including the use of fire-safe charging bags will minimize the risks. As you well point out, common sense is dependant upon users understanding the technology and that is not a given. Perhaps clubs could undertake an education program in association with their wings training which would include the safe handling of stored energy - be it liquid fuel or electrons. I don't support the endless regulation of our hobby but neither do I assume safety knowledge. There is a happy medium and I believe it is called education.

Re: Field Charging Stations?

This frigin thread is useless The spectators got in there vehicale and took a risk driving down the highway to come watch people fly there's plane. So they can sit there and take the risk of watching a battery catch on fire. Hell it would probably be the highlight of there day.

Re: Field Charging Stations?

I agree, people are making a big deal about something that might happen because of not knowing how to charge a lipo properly, if people would invest in a good balance charger, the result of a battery burning up are slim to nill , it makes me laugh that some people are so terrified about charging their batteries, that if they could charge them in an under ground vault they would, although these are the guys with their $10.00 charges, I use a icharge , model 206 and charge 2 or 3 batteries in parallel and they never even get warm to the touch, we have more of a chance getting hit by a car, then having a lipo battery go up in flames
