Smoked my Clutch Liner

I accidently started my Raptor 50 with the rx switch off. I had the thing roar to life at approx 25% power.

While I was holding it down from beating itself and me up at the same time. I managed to totally smoke the clutch liner. Talk about a stink! The heli is covered in burnt out black soot.

What are the procedures to replace? Are there other areas I should check for damage beyond the liner?

Thanks

Re: Smoked my Clutch Liner

You will have to drop the motor down, and also drop down the clutch bell. Then clean out the old liner from the bell using 220 grit paper should be fine. Clean with rub alcohol and use
JB weld to glue in a new liner. Do this by wrapping one piece of electrical tape around the clutch
shoe and placing the clutch bell with new liner over the shoe overnight. The clutch shoe gap may have opened up ...or sprung open. Use a rubber mallet to tap it down a bit using a micrometer
caliper or buy a new clutch shoe. Use raptortechnique.com for reference

Re: Smoked my Clutch Liner

Good advice from Cassat.

I always cut the liner longer than needed, apply the JB Weld, and place the cut ends of the liner together. Push on the other side of the liner so it looks like a thick "U" - this allows the liner to be placed into the clutch bell. Then push on the "lump" until all of the liner touches the bell (clear as mud). Basically you're ensuring that the liner is compressed into the bell and that the ends meet.

Re: Smoked my Clutch Liner

Thanks for the information. I am away from home right now. I did bring a spare clutch liner. But since I would have to purchase JB Weld etc... It might be the same price to just order up a new bell. Does a new clutch bell come with the liner already installed?

I pulled it apart tonight. There is nothing left of the old clutch liner. The clutch just started scratching into the bell. The clutch looks a little distorted.

Hey Norm if it's burn't throw it away as it'll throw a shoe next, the clutch liners I have been using 15 minute epoxy for 6 years now and never fails , so you can use the JB or just use epoxy, Jim.

Re: Smoked my Clutch Liner

NOOO, I just got my new revolution clutch bell. I glued in the new liner using JB weld. When I went to install all the items. I noted that the bearing sizes were different in the clutch bells. Looks like the raptor 50 titan uses a larger bearing in the bell. I will have to re use my old bell. No shiny new gold parts for me.

Re: Smoked my Clutch Liner

Couldn't you just head for the local bearing store, and tell them the dimensions you need, and replace the bearings with ones that'll fit your heli?

Re: Smoked my Clutch Liner

I'm working in a tiny town in Newfoundland. So there is no local bearing store. I ordered my parts from Great Hobbies. Thinking I would get back in the air quickly. They had packing and shipping delays. It took two weeks to get my parts. Now that I am missing the proper bearing and I want to get flying. I will just have to use my old clutch bell with new liner.

Thanks
