Camoflage Covering - Warbirds

Looking for advice in creating a camo covering job on a warbird. Can this be done with iron-on plastic materials such as Monokote/Ultracoat? Have read something a long time ago about assembling wing covering on a sheet of glass - tacking different colours together - before putting it on an open wing framework. Would greatly appreciate some suggestions/feedback.
