Re: DA-60 Testing ( Taming the Monster )

Alighty !!!!

Got out late this afternoon and was able to run the 60.
Don't have usable video of all the runs. But I do have a couple.

The videos I do have are with the RCExel ignition. The differences I noted were a bit smoother bottom end. I picked up about 100 rpm on the top end.
The midrange and transition is where I noticed the biggest change.
I was able to get the midrange running smoother with the RCExel.
The transition was right there and sounds like it will respond nicely in 3D flight.

In the videos there is a vibration that always occurs when I start to throttle up. I found it is actually the mounting plate on the test stand that was flexing. It was acting liek a spring board and amplifying the shake through that rpm range.
In the second short video, I moved the camera angle and you can clearly see the plate flexing and the engine moves up and down LOL.
The next time out I will make that part of the stand solid

So overall, the RCExel did make an improvement. Now I need to put it into real world use and mount it up to an airframe.
Hopefully it shouldn't be any worse than other single cylinders of this size.

Re: DA-60 Testing ( Taming the Monster )

Brad.. Great to hear that the REXcL ignition made some improvements!

Would it be worthwhile mounting the motor in the center of that plate and running it again?? I have a feeling it's not the test stand!!

Re: DA-60 Testing ( Taming the Monster )

I will make a new plate and remount the motor in the center of the 4 bolts.
Eliminate that variable.
And then spend some more time with it.

Re: DA-60 Testing ( Taming the Monster )

To me the test stand is for tuning. For me, I think looking for vibes on the test stand really has no merit because it will be a completely different engine once mounted to the airframe. i've had 30cc engines bounce all over on test stands.

Even different airframes ae going to be affected differently.

I'd say tune your engine and pipe, then install in the plane and check for vibes.

I wonder if swapping the ignition would help smooth out the DA 85 as well, have heard they are shakers too.

Re: DA-60 Testing ( Taming the Monster )

Was able to get out this evening and run the DA 60 with the tuned pipe.
I am using an MTW header at the stock length it came at and picked up 350 rpm over the stock muffler Using the same Xoar 24B.
It is also a lot quieter. On the test stand, the thing that makes the most noise when I rev it up is the Intake of the carburator.
I am still using the RCExel ignition timed at 26 degrees

This short run is with the Header lengthend 2 inches. No change in top end , but the midrange transitioned smoother. I think the whole thing was smoother overall.

Last run. I had done 5 runs prior, each run shortening the header a bit.
No changes in rpm..
For this last run, i leaned the needles a hair more because it was giving me a bit of smoke. No more smoke and picked up a couple more rpm.

Its all ready to go into a plane now. Just need for it to arrive LOL

Wicked Brad!

Looks as though the new mounting plate did wonders for the wobbles lol!

Thanks for going to the trouble, saves me a lot of precious time!

Re: DA-60 Testing ( Taming the Monster )

I owned a ES composite pipe with a BME 58 and the sound is that much quieter in the air and so so sweet when the pipe is on!
