Best cheap radio? FlySky GT3b? Then upgrade to...?

When I started to look for a budget radio many people pointed me to Spektrum (Futaba and Airtronics seemed pricey). But there was also a huge number of people spending $40 on a the FlySky radio and massive forum threads about it. So I bought one.
Receivers are cheap, range farther than I can see, and more adjustments than I've had to use so far. So, where do I go from here? I get the sense that "it's the best that I know" - who has upgraded from a FlySky to something with a faster response or better feel and was happy with their purchase? What did you get?
