Help with engine setup

I could really use some expert help with my nitro engine setup. Excuse me if I use the wrong lingo, as it's been about 20 years since I was a hobbyist.
My truck is an old Kyosho Rampage Outlaw Pro from the 90's. I've had it sitting in my garage since then, and I figure I would try to put it together. All is good except the engine configuration. I'm using a Team Associated .15 (#2900), and the crankshaft is neither long enough or machined to accept the parts from this kit. By long enough, I mean the engine gear doesn't reach the main truck gear. And by machined, there's a part that is supposed to screw onto the crank, but the crank is smooth. I guess you can say the engine is what appears to be for a car, but the kit seems to call for a crank that is typically found on an airplane engine (threaded).
