Annual Zone Meetings

Here are a few pointers on Zone meetings, which might be helpful to newcomers. I believe this material is accurate, but if in doubt, contact the Constitution Committee chairman. The material is provided in order to be helpful and for no other purpose.

1. Every zone in Canada has a Zone meeting in the fall, Dates and locations are on the MAAC website and in the magazine.
2. All members should try to attend their AZM, but if you cannot, you may give your proxy vote to a trusted individual who will use it to vote on your behalf ON ALL MATTERS unless specifically restricted. A fellow club member, who can attend, is a good person to whom to give your proxy.
3. Proxies must state the names and MAAC numbers of recipients and donors along with date and location of meeting. They must be dated, legible and signed.
4. Should a person give his proxy twice, the second one with the more recent date is valid. The earlier one is automatically cancelled.
5. To be valid, the AZM must have 5% of the open members of the zone present in person or by proxy.
6. Apathy is the undoing of democracy. Make your votes count. The business that goes to the AGM comes from the AZMs.
7. Know the difference between a resolution and a recommendation. The former changes the bylaws, the latter does not.
8. Awards: MAAC grants the following awards:
(a) Leader member: Must have been a member for ten years continuously and provided recognized leadership. Nominated and seconded at the AZM. ZD brings list to AGM where it is usual for his recommendations to be followed.
(b) Pioneer: This award recognizes contributions to aeromodelling PRIOR to the founding of MAAC in 1947. It is getting harder to give this award these days as it is obvious that recipients are octagenarians or older, and there is a finite and diminishing supply of these. Nominated and seconded with detailed documentation is required for this and the next two awards. Decision recommended by awards committee just prior to the MAAC AGM. Usually ratified by the board.
(c) Lifetime achievement: This award goes to a long serving MAAC member who has made outstanding contributions to the hobby, but who is not necessarily known nationally or internationally.
(d) Hall of Fame: Similar to Lifetime achievement but with the additional requirement of national recognition.
(e) Please note that nominations for awards may come from any zone, not just the zone of the nominee. See your ZD for details
9. Committees: There are many committees within MAAC. Open members may join any of these subject to the following:
(a) No more than two members per committee per zone. The chair does not count as a member in this case.
(b) You may be nominated as member, or chair, but not both. An unsuccessful nominee for chair does not receive a seat on the committee
(c) Committees are where the major daily running of MAAC takes place. Help is needed. Volunteer
(d) You may join as many committees as you like.
(e) Your AZM is your only opportunity to join a committee. If you cannot attend, a fellow member can put your name forward.
(f) That you were on the committee this year DOES NOT guarantee your position for the coming year. All committee personnel must reapply annually.

I hope that helps.
