Probably been asked many times before, just can't fine anything on it..

Why is it not more common for airplanes engines in surface vehicles?I have not been able to find one person on the net to try out. Am I missing obvious why it would be a dumb idea, aside from the fabrication difficulty?

Yes, Air engines are bigger, but if you can make a custom extended chassis, it could fit.

Different RPM range/torque; could gearing account for this?

Cooling; Additional fans or electric fan cooling could be added.

Please no flames, just a a curious question.

Re: aircraft engine in car/truck

I'm assuming that along with the obvious differences in casting for better cooling and crank setup for adapting to the output gearing there may be different port timing to alter the power curve.

I doubt an electric fan would be the most efficient method as one with enough flow would draw lots of current, enough to require a very large battery. If that were the case then that battery would better serve as the power source for a brushless drive system. That brings me to what I suspect may be the reason it is not worth the work. With electric power systems so efficient now............

p.s. to whet your appetite for aircraft engines in cars, I thought I would provide the ultimate example:

I know there's money in aviation........I put it there!

Re: aircraft engine in car/truck

Just starting my reading on this thread and it looks like some people have done this with the 4 stroke engines;

Seems like there is a lot of mods involved, even head cylinder modifications. Since the 4 stroker have valve timing, you can probably advance the valve timing to help bring down the power band. Looks like a lot of work, but at the same time it would be a good challenge.

In terms of cooling, running a fan off the pulley would be a good solution. It'll just require some fabrication of how to mount the fan and also ducting it right to cool the motor properly.

Off to do more research...
