HK Ultra 120 HV Speed Controller - Experiences?

I wondered if anyone had used a HobbyKing Ultra 120 HV ESC and if so was it successful?
I recently maidened an H9 Carden YAK 54 using an AXI 5345/14 motor with the Ultra 120 HV ESC with a 12S setup consisting of two Zippy Flightmax 6S x 5800 mah lipos in series. The first couple of flights we took it easy & landed after about 5 mins to check out battery usage (about 2500 mah out of each). Next couple of flights started trying the IMAC Basic routine and after about 4mins 30 secs, started getting surging from the motor/esc. ESC was very hot.
Did some ground tests with a Watt meter & found that batteries were holding up well & definately not getting down near cutoff voltage but ESC was getting hot & surging was happening after 2+ mins. Was measuring average 40 Amps with peaks just under 80 Amps. ESC should be able to handle it comfortably but seems to be overheating well below rated capacity. It is located in maximum airflow on motor box inside monster YAK cowl.
Anyone experience anything similar?
