Yesterday when I drove into Banff from the east, there was an RC plane flying north of the TCH 1. Where do the local Baff RC pilots fly?

Re: Banff RC

Hi Mark,

Was this actually in Banff or was this at Canmore? I have seen guys flying along the north side of the TC hwy several times and you can actually see the field on google maps,,it is just west of the Four Points Sheraton.

I am not sure if there is a club in Canmore or Banff..there are none listed on MAAC's website by zone so probably just a few locals.

Did you see that........I actually meant to do that...

Re: Banff RC

yeah they fly off of the road over towards Harvie Heights just west of Canmore. There's been guys flying there for years, I can remember RC flying there back in the mid 80's when I was living in Banff

Re: Banff RC

No it was in Banff coming in from the east and I just turned off the TCH towards town. They were off to my right flying up against the mountainside, it looked like a Radian Glider.

Re: Banff RC

Might not have been maac sanctioned then. While not an expert, I have a hard time believing that Parks Canada would actually allow a club in a national park but that's just a guess.

Re: Banff RC

That was probably me. I often fly on Stoney Squaw lookout point on the road to norquay. I also fly on the east side of tunnel mountain near buffalo mountain lodge. Both of these sites are challenging slope soaring sites for different wind direction. When it's calm, I fly at cascade ponds in the summer and on lakes in the winter.
Not many people fly around Banff. It's not easy with all of the strange wind currents. I have run into some locals who say they fly but I think that they mostly have some planes in pieces in there homes because I've never seen anyone else fly. I know that the canmore cadets fly once in a while at cascade ponds but only once or twice a year.
