Can an automotive battery charger be used as a power supply for a Lipo charger?
I have a small bench top charger that does 6 and 12 volt lead acid batteries at 6 amps.

Re: 12 volt power supply.

The short answer is NO. The output of most charges are not filtered but a raw rectified output. You can use them if you "float a 12 volt battery on the output to smooth the voltage.

Re: 12 volt power supply.

I would like to recommend to you some good power supplies:

I've been using the P350 version for 2 years and it is very reliable. I was planning on going cheap or DIY but didn't want to deal with the hassle and have been very happy with my purchase. Very great customer support from those guys.

Re: 12 volt power supply.

If you connect a 12V battery in parallel and use a charger that plugs into the lighter socket it will probably work fine. The maximum voltage will be around 14V, so three cells will be it's limit.

Re: 12 volt power supply.

Pretty much in agreement with everyone else here. Battery chargers are unfiltered, thus provide a very "dirty" supply of power where charging a battery smooths it out. So as stated, if you connected a battery to it at the same time, yes it will work, but I think you're defeating the purpose then. Other than that, a capacitor could be used as a filtering device as well.
