I'm guessing you weren't running a separate external BEC, and that the ESC is what was powering all your electronics?

Most ESCs use a crappy linear BEC that can't handle more than 12.6v in a lot of cases. If you plug in a 22.2v battery like you did, the result is usually pretty much what you described.

The little linear BECs work fine for the smaller helicopters like the 450s, but anything bigger and you'll find most guys either use an external BEC or Kontronic ESCs because they have quality switching BECs integrated.

If you were running an external BEC, and you'd removed the positive lead from the ESC's servo lead, then it was just a cheap ESC. Sometimes they fail.

was it something I did wrong or just cheap quality ESC
there was lot of great reviews.
this is the reason why I went with this one and the price of course
anyhow that's the update no Maiden for me in the near future
thanks for all your help
I would check and make sure it was for 6s and # amps required first. Second being red to red and Black to black If that is correct probably a defective esc. I had bought a few esc's for a quad copter and when plugged in some would be fine others went up in smoke
