Carbon Kevlar

Not sure where to put this but I am experimenting with a new material for parts. So far it is looking to be a killer combination. The plate I am using is 7 layers of carbon graphite surrounded by a couple layers of carbon kevlar. I can get the kevlar in both red/black and yellow/black

Well thought I'd share the progress of my Storm Buggy....

After last race it sat on the shelf for some time while I worked on my heli...

Then I bought this sheet of carbon kevlar...

Beautiful stuff but really tough to cut clean...

So I stripped it down totally. First I cleaned and put dif lube in all 3 difs and shimmed them up. Then I deanodized the chassis... I also made a rear bulkhead brace (where it broke before) out of some channel aluminum...super strong..

I picked up a second Storm

So I had a Pro shock tower to work with and made some parts out of carbon as well (for Storm 2)

After a lot of trial and error, I managed to get some clean cuts and finished parts...

Here it is mounted...

And the servo tray with the carbon transponder mount..

I just have to make the front tower now, I allready have the front hinge pin brace made out of kevlar but it's clear coat is drying right now.

It took cutting, then crazt glue on the threads, then filing each kevlar thread off to get it smooth, then I clear coated the final product. The carbon parts are easy to make, the kevlar is a real challenge.

I am going to be sending a plate off to a cnc shop this week to see how it cuts this stuff, otherwise it will be just for personal use as it took me too long to make these so far.
We will see how they hold up this weekend. Sure looks sweet.

Well here is the finished project. I just need to pick up an air filter today...

doesn't even look like my Storm anymore. I honestly will have to make another set of shock towers and go double thickness, but I am bringing my aluminum ones to put on. This is a prototype so I expect a couple bugs to show up. after assembly, I feel they are a little too flexible but we will see how they hold up.

Wow a very interesting post.
Was the material expensive?

and how did you make the cloth ridgid?
I thought carbon graphite was brittle.
