I agree whole-heartedly in supporting the local hobby shop and do so whenever I can. However if you do choose to order from the States, listen to Dougman and what he said about UPS. Avoid cross-border UPS shipments at all costs!!! The "Broker" fees that they charged made me want to break something I'll tell ya. Exhorbitent, exharbident, ex ... really damn high charges, and nothing you can do about it ! Use USPS (note the extra S), the United States Postal Service. They are still pretty quick I suppose. Or what I do now is have my items shipped to a border store and I drive down and pick them up. Only a dollar or two for their service and then just taxes at the border (which I would have had to pay no matter where they are bought). Yeah its 45 mins each way, so I wait and buy several things (ebay mostly) and make a trip out of it. If you have to have it and your LHS can't or won't get it, or takes just too long, then you gotta do what you gotta do.
