I find the best way is to grip the flywheel with a pair of chanelocks unscrew the nut, then using a flat screwdriver use a hammer and strike the back of the flywheel, if it does not come off with the first hit turn the flywheel 180' and do it again, do this holding the engine in your hand don't put the end of the crank against a hard surface.

what i do is very much the same as the above guys.

channel locks and a cloth inside (no damage done), and a deep 8mm socket for the nut.
then, a 3 thing puller or, mount the crankshaft on something ridgid and tap it with a mallot (remember to "rock it" off, meaning to hit one side, then the other, and so on instead of the same side because that will wedge it and therefore lock it on more.)
