It will take about 2 cans at the most to paint a Off-road body but an on-road body takes closer to 3 to be safe. I like using the Tamiya Gun Metal and getting decals from Canadian tire. When you get bored of them just remove and get other ones. Ron Krikke from Krikke racing is a great guy to talk to and deal with. All my Parts and the Samba pipe came from him.

If you go with a lighter colour, it could take more cans of paint to make it opaque. I've done a metallic yellow McLaren F1(with Cartoon Network decals) and a BMW M3 GTR in pearl white. Since I was worried about the paint flaking if it got too thick, they're both slightly translucent. Everything since has been painted with darker colours- Leopard and Monster Beetlre were Blue and Silver, Monster was Black and flamed, the Stadium was too many colours to count.
