Worst crash was actually my sons crash.
I had just gotten him a Stampede. We were living in Ottawa at the time. So I took him over to the track in Hull, the one across form the Casino.
He was so excited to run it on a track. He got up on the drivers stand and hit the throttle. He went full tilt down the straight. He had a grin from ear to ear ...But he forgot to let off the throttle at the end of the straight and launched straight off the banked turn at the end of the straight, and went head on with a steel post in the chain link fence.
Broken shock, bulkhead, a-arm, caster block, bent axle, stripped servo, bent steering turnbuckle.

Mine was years ago when I first got into RC. I was driving my brand new Grasshopper down the driveway to the street. I didn't pay to much attention to the road and went straight out into it. Unfortunately there was a cutlass driving by at the time and ran straight over my car. I still remmeber the sounds of snapping plastic! Whimper.........

try this on for size:
remember when the 777 sp1 was the hot ticket about 2 years ago?
remember when the VZB v-spec was the hot ticket in and around the same time?
i had a BRAND NEW sp1 and vzb - my very first 8th scale nitro. i was breaking it in at the parking lot at dino's track (birchmount and ellesmirror) the very day they had to close their doors... was running back and forth getting broken in and all. had some help from dino and another guy getting the linkages and tune good. breakin was going well. decided it was all ready to go so i started farting around by the loading dock in the far corner jumping off the embankment. so thats all good. then i turn the car to head back because the tank was a little low. i gas it and vvrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR it loses all control and heads off full tilt across the lot, ripped under the bottom of the chain link fence and into a stack of wooden skids. Top speed, by the way, had just been measured at 71 kph with my gps on board. the car is wedged into the opening in the skids and at this point i'm running. i hear the motor absolutely screaming at the top of its lungs. veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee POP!
one dead vzb - conrod, piston and sleeve. later found out the crank pin was no good AFTER i rebuilt it and ran it.
front arms
front cvd's
both centre cvd's
front shock tower
ackerman plate
front aluminum upper brace
front tension rod (brace to chassis)
how the funk the shocks survived, i'll never know
radio tray plate
later founf front c-hub was damaged at the threads
front bulkhead
front sway bar
front hinge pins (at bulkhead)
at the time, no hobby shops had kyosho parts in stock. i had to rely on e-bay to get this thing rebuilt, and it cost me a fortune. i didnt even get it rebuilt untill about a month and ahalf or so before the 6th annual sprucewood.

so the reason the motor ran away at top speed instead of burning on the clutch was that the impact folded the chassis badly enough that it snapped the front centre cv shaft clean in half. the motor then only had the resistance of the centre diff, which only had the stock oil in it.
And the reason the car ran away was becasue i neglected to properly secure my rx battery pack, and because i didn't know what a failsafe and a throttle return spring was. 1 cent worth of electrical tape would have prevented the problem. The problem arose because i had used the stock 4-aa battery holder that came with the radio control. i just popped the batteries in the holder and dropped it into the radio box where it bounced around and one cell popped out. no more power... bye bye. If i had wrapped the holder with tape and stuffed some foam in the box with it, there would have been no problem.

so theres three things you should remember here:
ALWAYS use a throttle return device
ALWAYS use radio gear with an electronic failsafe
ALWAYS build your battery packs like a solid brick and secure them with foam

when i used to run 0nroad, I had a NTC3, and I was going down the back straight, and they made their walls with interlocking 2x4's, and I guess one of the boards was sticking out a bit or something, I was right along the one wall giving another guy room, and I hit the wall sticking out I guess, I hit so hard the foam from my air filter (I was running one from the original savage) flew out of the filter, through the cooling hole in the windsheild, and about 10-15feet in front of my car, the car stopped dead from full tilt, I bent the chaisisi, broke pretty much every part in the front end, I pretty much replaced every part on that car and it still never drove right again,
