I would also take the SS kit so you know how to put it together when you need to do service on it. Also the body looks better along with the larger motor. Most guys already have upgrade radios to that's not an issue.

Gerald has a good point. Look around for a newer RTR, then buy the all aftermarket upgrades, which fix the known issues. Shocks, clutch, axle extenders, etc.....The money works out similiar, but now my RTR has all the fixes done. That is exactly what I've done.
The SS kit is nice, but did not really address the problem area's, and you will need to upgrade it later anyways.
Just my opinion.

Hey everybody! This is really the first year that I got into the large scales. I ended buying 3 of them. (Call me crazy!). Before buying any large scale off road, I looked into buying either a rtr Baja 5b or the Baja SS kit. After alot of thinking, i was leaning towards the SS kit. For the money, you can't go wrong. The SS kit comes with alot of upgrades right out of the box. Purchasing these upgrades would cost you alot more if they were purchased seperately. Another reason that i was leaning towards the SS kit is because you have to build it. By building it, you know how to fix it if anything goes wrong etc. Even though the rtr comes with a radio, you will eventually upgrade your radio.
One last thing, the Baja SS looks alot better than the Baja 5b out of the box.
This is just my views on the HPI Baja! I hope this helps!!

RTR from hpi would be better because it can get you up and running fast and on the same day you bought it.

especially if you don't want to be bothered by putting something together. one can just go to the store, get a set of double aa for the transmitter, charge the receiver pack, mix oil with gas and fire up the car and drive.

some peeps like to walk in like a dealership with the car already built and not medle or mod stuff. rtr works if you're this type of person.
