Balancing helps keep each cell in the lipo in the same voltage range, say you have a 2s lipo ; if cell 1 has a bit more voltage then cell 2 a balancer will slowly drain cell 1 until it has the same voltage as cell 2.

How really depends what lipos you choose, i stick by the enerland cells (flightpower/trakpower, Polyquest, Neu lipos) as they are the best on the market, a Flightpower V-balance or Hyperion are the most common used from what i see.

For my 1/10 2wd i use the Trakpower 4900 With V-balancer and it works flawlessly, for my 1/8 RC8 buggy i use a Flightpower 5000 4s and there is no problems with any of the batteries.

Dont let any cheaper imitations of batteries let you think your getting a good deal, save up your pennies and dont cheap out on the lipos
