Remote control car whiz kid Ty Tessmann has sponsorship offers flying in faster than he can count, after placing seventh out of 220 competitors in the 1/8th Buggy World Championship. The 15-year-old Hatter competed against racers who were in their 20s at the North Carolina championship earlier this month.

Ty's father Gord said he had a few shaky qualifying rounds but he kept his cool and shot through to the hour-long final race.

Ty said he's very happy and pleased with how he did and feels all of his hard work is starting to pay off.

"Ty's now in that elite group of racers," Gord said. "His future in racing is pretty much locked in."

Currently, Ty is sponsored by HPI/Hot Bodies but the Tessmann family is considering new sponsorship offers. Gord said they'll decide on a deal based on whichever company makes the best offer. As sponsors, companies generally offer anything from parts to fuel, to have their brand attached to a particular racer. One competitor at the recent competition reportedly earns more than $200,000 through his sponsorship deals.

Tessmann, who is home-schooled, devotes almost all his spare time to his remote-control vehicles. He builds them, works on them and gets them ready for competition. The youngster has different cars for a number of competition categories.

Gord said he's very proud of his son because he's a hard worker and very determined character traits few other 15-year-olds possess.

"He's very committed and doesn't give up. He doesn't go to parties or out to the movies, said the proud father. "He knows what he wants and understands what he has to do to get it. Very focused."

Ty is probably going to take a month off from racing before he starts gearing up for a race in California. Next year, Ty plans to compete at the electric world competition in South Africa and then in 2010 at the 1/8th world competition in Australia.
