Turning a PT into an in-house rental

I was just reading a thread on S-Grid about several customers dissatisfaction with the in-house transponder system that AMB offers.... specifically regarding the lifespan of the internal battery, charging and discharging issues, and the high cost of replacement batteries.
Heres one solution:
Take a AMB PT and shoegoo one of those little lipo's to the bottom. Should be more than enough power for more than the day. Make a plastic hardcase out of poly-carb and shoe-goo it to the lipo. Cut both leads short and solder on a mini-deans. Goop up the PT lead to the case, and leave the other so it can be unplugged to charge the lipo.
Take the top off an 8th scale body mount, wing mount or truggy body mount (the part where the body clip goes through). Screw it to a piece of poly-carb through the bottom and shoe-goo that to the top of the PT. You can also make a mount out of several differnet materials for cheap.
Now you have an in-house rental for a fraction of the cost of an entire rack AMB rentals. You can charge it with your own charger. It can also be serviced as needed... I found out that WD40 will eat at the shoe-goo if it ever needs to be undone.

Seems like alot of hassle to go thru when you can just pay 30 bux and have the battery in a house transponder professionally replaced. Or buy the two dollar battery and figure out how to do it yourself. Our local club had a guy that put new batts in whenever they needed it. The batts should be good for three years or so. I read that thread too. There main complaint is about amb having bad customer service. As in if the warranty expires they will not service the battery or give a discount on a new one.

If you hack up a PT into what you are saying then you are hacking up a $105 PT that has nothing wrong with it. Be better off just renting it as is and then you could sell it some other time if it was no longer needed. Like they said in that thread, have the person that rents it leave their keys with the RD so they don't walk off with the PT.

i hear ya, but the problem with renting a pt as a pt is that they tend to get the crap kicked out of them. Especially the leads. Sammy's speedway went through this.
The savings in $$$ comes when you have 4 or 5 converted PT's to satisfy your club racers, instead of a rack of 20 that costs how much??
