I think it would be a great way to start the race. Not every race in existance has to have a grid start based on qualifying position. This is offroad r/c and it has some of its roots in motocross. Its just not practical to have drop start gates at every track around the world. I would say that if it was practical, you'd probably scour at the idea of starting a race in the grid format because it would be so foreign to what you're used to seeing.
Just go with it and have fun. Its not the end of the world.

By the way, I hope theres a hairpin at the end of the starting lane... i miss the 1st turn antics of motocross!
