As we approach the 2011 Motorama Nitro Championships I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and explain our plan for this years event. I was very honored when the MR organizers asked me to be a part of this wonderful event. They want the Nitro part of MR to be as important and as exciting as all the other parts of the MR experience and asked for my help in accomplishing this. For those of you that do not know me, I am from Milwaukee Wisconsin where I have owned Trackside Hobbies and Raceway since 1993. Through the past nearly 18 years I have raced all forms of RC and during the past 10 years have been involved in organizing, announcing and race directing events all over the world. Including 5 IFMAR World Championships, Numerous American and European national Championships and other important and prestigious events.
The organizers of MR asked for my help to try and give spectators and racers a better experience in the Nitro event and I am sending you this email to explain exactly what the plan is for this years event. As most of you know, this event is extremely time sensitive, meaning we have only 24 hours to layout and construct a track that not only needs be challenging and drivable for all abilities of drivers but also be exciting for the spectators and hold together to make for the best racing possible. We have assembled a crew who has the experience to do all this and will work very hard to ensure your experience at MR is the best possible.
Pits will open Friday morning at 8am, There will be some tables already there for drivers who have reserved tables and teams who are supporting the event. As you bring your equipment in, we will have Jamie Tennies there to help facilitate the move in and work to keep things organized and have a good flow through the pits. We will have lanes marked out to ensure there are proper traffic lanes for people to move in and out of the pits, There will not be tables or chairs allowed in these marked traffic lanes, this is not only for the flow of racers, but also for safety.
INSIDE TRAILER PARKING:
Those racers who have reserved inside trailer parking will be able to load them inside on Thursday night from 5-7pm. Unfortunately this will be the only time access will be available to load the trailers. After the load in, the HVAC people will be working on the loading door to set up the exhaust system for the event. Sunday move out will begin at the conclusion of the event.
Practice will begin at 9am on Friday. All of you will receive an email with the practice heat listings. Obviously it will be a bit busy during the early part of Friday as racers are busy trying to get set up with their pits and practice starting only 1 hour later, but it is on you guys the racers to be prepared before you arrive. If you are in some of the early heats, then you will have to have things prepared and ready to go before you arrive.
We will be running 3 rounds of controlled practice via heats, This is the only way to run an event with this many entrants and keep things organized and fair. Heats will be 5 min runs. with 2 min between heats, We will be running a live clock, meaning that the clock will automatically run and not stop. So it is on you the driver to ensure that you are in the staging/warmup area early and get on the track when your heat is up.
PEOPLE FLOW AND MARSHALING:
There will be tables set up to warm up your engines and prepare for your run. We will have a up and down on the drivers stand. You will enter from the staging area and exit the other end of the stand. There are tables at the bottom of the exit where you will put your vehicle and radio and then go out to marshall. After your run, ALL racers are required to marshal after your practice runs, heats and mains! THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS, unless you have a physical problem. If you are running 2 classes and happen to be back to back, then it is your responsibility to provide a marshall for your area and notify myself on who it is. If you fail to marshall your position, then you will loose a lap from your best qualifying run. This is the same procedures that races around the world follow, so we should have no problem with marshaling. There will also be safety vest at each marshaling position that you are required to wear during your marshaling duties.
With this magnitude of an event and driver abilities ranging from beginner to expert we will be seeding the qualifiers, I have used this process for many races throughout the years including last weekend Reedy Offroad Race of Champions and it is the best way to ensure a quality event and make it fair for not only the experienced racer, but most important the beginner to intermediate racer. As an organizers my job is to try and ensure that every racer has a fun experience at the event. When it comes to ensure that during qualifying, it is difficult for racers to do this if they are of less ability and always having to move out of the way for the extremely fast guys. The fast guys will always be fast and know how to get around slower traffic, but it is no fun for a racer who by the luck of the draw has drivers in his/her heat that are 3 laps faster than them. they are always moving out of the way and in no way have a chance to get a good qualifying run, so this is how this process will work.
We will run 3 rounds of practice. Round 1 will be just practice. we will run timing, but will not use it for anything. Rounds 2 and 3 will be used for seeding of the qualifiers. During round 2 and 3 we will take a racers FASTEST 3 CONSECUTIVE LAPS and use this time to seed the qualifiers, We will not be taking your total 5 min run, JUST YOUR FASTEST 3 CONSECUTIVE LAPS to seed the heats for Saturdays qualifying. This will ensure that all heats have drivers of equal ability and give everyone the best chance to have good qualifiers. Since we are seeding the qualifiers, there will be no need to do a resort on Saturday. This will allow us to keep the program rolling and finish at the earliest time possible on Saturday. This process has worked for all the major events I run and will make for the best event we can organize.
For all the major events we do, we provide the racer with a time table, this table will show you what time each race is at. So if you are in race 15 it will be at 2:08pm this way you know exactly when your race is up and you can plan things around that. Now circumstances arise that might get us off this time table, but we will do all we can to stay on time so you can enjoy your entire MR experience.
We will run 3 rounds of qualifying using qualifying points system. We will take a drivers best 2 of 3 points to set the mains. Track will be run with a live clock, 5 min quals and 3 min between races. Unfortunately, if you have a problem before your heat, we will not be able to wait.
Mains will start Sunday morning at 830am. We will take the top 12 qualifiers to the A mains and will bump up 3 from the lower mains giving us 15 car Finals. Awards will be giving to the top 12 drivers in the A Main, Winners of the lower mains will get an award. The award for the lower mains will go to the winner of the main. Not 4th place after the top 3 bump up.

Here at MR we have a very unique opportunity to expose our wonderful hobby to tens of thousands of motor sport enthusiasts. All the spectators at MR are into motor sports. Many of them don't even know our hobby exists. There is no better way to show how much fun and exciting our form of racing is than by putting on a good show. The Show is you the racers! and all of us in the organization of the event expect the best behavior during your entire stay at MR. I know that at times things can get intense and heated but I expect everyone to act like mature adults and handle situations that arise maturely. We will not tolerate any foul language, throwing of equipment or fights. any of these situations will be grounds for disqualification and or elimination from the event. Also something that everyone needs to be aware of is the possibility of theft. We are in a open area where there will be many people that we don't know, unfortunately not everyone is honest, so keep an eye on your equipment and your buddies equipment. PUT YOUR NAME ON YOUR STUFF!!!!!!!! RADIOS, STARTER BOXES, GLOW STARTERS, ECT, ECT, ECT. This way if something ends up missing or somebody grabs the wrong radio from the pit area, we can quickly find it.
We look forward to meeting all of you next week at the event and will do all we can to give you the best MR event possible.
If you have any questions at all regarding the event, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
See you next week.
