Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Nice work.
Love the look.
I am also making one too, but I am building a turbine version with custom scale gears.
I will also be doing it as a kit for people who want to build one also.
We can share tip if you like.
No pics from me yet.
Too personal at this time.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

How far along are you on yours? I'm mouldings mine up now.
Mine will be a turbine , but my goal is to make it so "if" someone wanted an electric version, a twin 120 mm EDF will an easy conversion since I already have a thrust tube mould. Of course the EDF version would be lighter.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

I am still working on the gear setup for the wings.
I am trying to make it as scale as possible. I have the drawing.
They come out to be 11 inches long giving my plane 98 inches long.
Once the gears are complete, the wings will be built to suit their length.
Nose gear was a challenge to make scale due to their complexity but when there is a
will there is a will
This plane will be very scale to the drawings

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Like wise, when I was in the design stage, I knew of a couple craps in the flying club who had tried building a very scale Arrow, but the group only got to the drawing stage before they quit. I approached the guys and learned they were given access to original engineering drawing from none other tgan Jame Floyd himself, who apparently had a full set of drawings. The chap who did the working drawings was a professional draftsman and quite accurately did a set of working drawings from these blueprints. He lofted 22 fuselage cross sections which were pretty accurate. Their model was at 1/10th scale, was to be powered by twin Turbax ducted fans and Rossi DF motors. I was given these drawings and I had them enlarged to 1/8th scale as I originally was going to use twin Dynamax DF's with OS .90 DF motors, which were sorta high tech way back in the late 1990's.

But, like most big projects, cash flow, time, family, my job, and of course, other projects got in the way. After the initial start, I stopped working on it for about ten years and the plug sat on the shelf in my garage.

I was new at doing fiberglass work and figured I would do the fuselage as a one piece item, boy was that silly. It grew to around ten feet long and it was a bear to move around in my small work shop which is only 12' wide.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Here's a picture of the plug set up while I was at one of the jet meets in Bellville sometime around 1999, I also had black hair but now it's rather grey.....😋

Originally, the wing was going to be three pieces, a center section with the main landing gear and the two outer panels. But, this sacrificed almost 40 percent of the fuselage depth, the wing saddle was somewhere between 4 and 5 feet long so it wasn't very practical.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

I was there at that meet.
I was flying a JHH A-4.
I was with the Quebec gang.
I fell in love with your plane and promissed myself to build one
when I get the turbine fever.
Now I have it and Time to start. I have all the detail Drawings I need.
If anyone out there that have CAD drawings of the gears, It would be greatly
appreciated if you can help me out with the gears.
I have some access to machines and engineering personel at work.
E-mail; eugene.christopher@aero.bombardier.com
We can work out somekind of a deal of your choice.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Check out the last post on page four of this thread, a chap by the name of Danyel did a set of cad drawings, he might be able to help you. I wanted to do the very scale main gear, but the details and function is actually fairly complicated, and for a model, I believed it would be too delicate to be very reliable.

The compression or shortening of the gear wasn't the main problem, it was the slight twist and movement of the main wheel assembly that got me stumped.

Preparing the opposite side of the forward section of the fuselage and the base of the cockpit section, two coats of gelcoat. Tomorrow, will lay on the fiberglass.the tail cone stinger is all layer up, tomorrow, trim the base and hopefully, pop it off the plug.
