That's correct, it will look like the fuselage mould I did for my smaller Arrow. I figure there will be a plywood rib or bridge every 12".

But here it is with three coats of gelcoat. Tomorrow morning, I'll be fiberglassing......

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Ok Peter, the top half of the fuselage has been moulded. Tomorrow, the plywood supports get made and attached.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

For those who were wondering, big mould or small moulds, they all seem to deform if not supported. So here is one way to lessen the problem. I've spaced the plywood supports every 12". They don't have to be a perfect profile and you don't want them tight against the sides as the steady pressure will eventually warp the mould. I use 3/8" fir plywood, rigid and it doesn't add much weight to the mould.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

I presume it warps so much because you are using Poly instead of epoxy?

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

No, epoxy will warp slightly too. I use poly for moulds simply due to the cost. The top of the fuse used almost 4 gallons of resin and that's only two layers of the mat. If this was going to be a "high" production mould, there would be additional layers. So far, the costs to make this mould is around $400.00 and I hope I have enough resin left to do the bottom and the hatch.

To do it in epoxy, at around $140.00 a gallon would be too expensive for my budget. I plan on making less than 10 copies in total.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Well, it's Sunday morning, this will be my task for today, grind off the excess and flip this mould over. then remove the parting boards. Everything so far has turned out really nice. I will put plywood supports around the nacelle area after I pull the moulds off the plug, I might need a bit of flex in the mould at this point to get it to release.

For me, getting to this stage is half the excitement of making moulds.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

This morning, got out the Dremel and my B&D RTX ( like a Dremel ...... but better ) with my Dura Grit carbide cutting wheel and trimmed the mould along the parting boards. Of course, the shop vac nozzle was positioned right infront to suck up the itchy fiberglass dust. Within 30 minutes, all was trimmed and all sharp edges grounded off. Then with a screwdriver, tapped the parting boards briskly and they simply poped off, the flange is perfect, what a relief.

Tonight, I will clean up the bottom and start the process again. So my next post will be when that is done and prying the two sides apart.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

When do you expect to be able to sell a few? Sure would love to build one for twin turbines.
