I rather do the scratch builds the way I do them as I can control the amount of foam easier. Plus, I just like building that way. I have all tge hot wire tools too, so making sheets of foam any thickness, down to just a couple of milimeter thick is very easy.

But, when it comes to building master plugs to make fiberglass parts, it's hard to beat wood. I had a friend who used foam to make the master plugs, but he told me the issue with that is the small dings that occured when moving it around.

My problem at this moment is what to do with the master plugs once the moulds are made. I still have all the master plugs and moukds from all tge models I designed and manufactured over the years, my garage and other storgae soace is filling up fast. I just can't bring myself to cut them up and get rid of them and I won't give them away.

I'm so sentimental, huh.
Ya . having molds tales up alot of space. The plane I'm building right now is probably going to be the last one that will be built with my foam cutting method. I'm going to be switching over to 3D printing .

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

I've always been good working with my hands and tools, sorta in my blood. I seem to have the ability to watch someone do something and pick it up quickly, it's a gift I guess. Back in the early 1990's, my buddy, Ted, suggested I learn how to make my own fiberglass planes and offered to show me the process. My first jet project was refurbishing a JHH F-86 and then he showed me how to make a complete fuselage, he had molds for a A-4 Skyhawk which I practiced on. Also, I had a good friend, Gary Strong, who designed jets for Yellow Aircraft. He showed me quite a few tricks of the trade. So, that started me doing fiberglassing. So far, I estimate I've made about 200 kits and planes while I was Models by John. So, now I am showing Ted the tricks, but we will take on this project together, once I get home.

As far as making molds, I used to make custom furniture as a part time way to make a few dollars, so sculpting wood is easy for me, having a full blown wood working shop dosen't hurt either. I've got all the tools.

I always look at it as a challenge and always wanting to learn new ways to do stuff. For some reason or other, I think it is fun.

I Don't know everything, but if you ever have any questions, please ask, I'm happy to help out if I can.

The teacher became the student LOL
I still have a few tricks up my sleeve
John is being very modest in his abilities and knowledge he is a true craftsman whether it comes easy or not. We have worked on many projects together over the years and he always seems to amaze me to this day
I am finishing off a few projects and me and my wingman will be waiting for you when you get back to jump on the Arrow

SEE YA
