Thanks Larry, but I have scale templates of the wing roots and the outer wing root and the wing tips. I can quite accurately cut foam core wings, plus, somewhere in my shop, I also have the airfoil data sheet.

John, are you using scale wings on your models. From what I understood when talking to Doug Hyslip at the Avro museum in Calgary, is that he had to make a special airfoil on the outboard wiglet in order for the Arrow to fly properly at low reynolds numbers.

Landing Gear

I want the double wheel setup and have it articulate like the real one. Plus, it should look like the real one. Then there is the real life side of the coin, the manufacturing costs. The more detailed, the more it costs. Look at BVM retracts and stut systems for their sport jets, very expensive but they work beautifully. I have approached a friend whose hobby is machine work, he has a well equipment machine shop in his basement. I told him I would want a minimum quantity of 12 sets, that'll be 12 complet sets of strutts and only the main gear retract units, the nose gear retract units will be off the shelf items.

I'm leaning more towards electric powered units than the air hydraulic at this point in time. But not with the circuit boards on the main gear to keep it simply. There will be micro switches limiting the travel.
Landing gear for the Arrow is a big project on its own.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Yes, I saw and photographed that model's landing gear while at the museum. To solve the complex movements of the real aircraft's main gear retraction, they simply did away with it by moving the wherl location aft so the gear retracts 90 degrees to the aircrafts centerline. I think that is how I will tackle the problem also.

I only need to design the retract unit itself due to the location of the strut near the leading edge.

I know some of you who were looking at getting a copy of this model wanted composite wings, well, for only a few planes, it's simply not worth the couple of months of work to produce the masters and the number of moulds. Plus, store the moulds afterwards as they are not small. So, they will be foam core items, only the vertical fin will be composite and that's because the master has been made already and is ready to have the mould made, otherwise, it to would be foam core.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Your making 12 sets of struts. Does this mean that there could be 12 semi-kits available? I have been trying to find one to put twin Wren 54s in. Arrow is a favorite of mine. I have collected lots of Arrow pics etc.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

That was my intension, but my friend who is the hobbist machinist hasn't gotten back to me, so as it stands, it looks as though I might be literally custom making the main gear retract units myself for the first one.

As for the possible other copies, I hope to keep the design so I can use as many off the shelf parts as pissible. Time will tell......

I found this on YouTube, fairly simple, not to many parts, https://youtu.be/K0h7pq3oxM8

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Hi John,
You probably already know this but they make a set of dual wheel main gear retractables for the Russian Su-34 that might be a good guide for the Arrow (see AliExpress link following).

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/RC-Pl...972756928.html.

Just a suggestion for a starting point for ideas.

Regards,
Mike

I am sure that the Arrow retractable gear is achievable.
