I can't believe how fast the spring and summer is flying by. I've been so busy,,have not accomplished anything since returning from the deep south in April. So, just so some guys might have thought I've kicked the bucket, I'm still kicking.

So, pulled out the top half of the fuselage mould and today, started making the large access hatch. And it is large, almost 11" wide and 26" long. I just hate those small access hatches 😎.

The fences are simply 3/8" thick poplar covered in aluminum duct tape. The fences are bonded to the fuselage surface with bondo after a waxing and coat of PVA.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Two coats of un-waxed gelcoat, tonight, late in the evening, I will lay up the surface viel and the matting. Then tomorrow, will pop it out, clean it and make the mould off it for the actual hatch.

Once the hatch mould is made, this part will be trimmed and re-installed in the fuselage with screws.

Also, cleaning up the edges of the whole moukd and repairing any oops tgat occured when the master plug was pulled out. The photo shows the edge of the tail cone being repaired. When the mould is first seperated from the plug, the edges are very sharp and can easily chip. You have to go around the edges with a sanding block and sand the sharpness away.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

After my morning coffee, pulled the hatch master out of the fuselage mould, no damage to the fuselage mould, perfect, and the master turned out really nice. After a quick trim and wash, it's ready to make a hatch mould today.

The foam Arrow sits behind it for comparison, as I said, I like my hatches big 😎

Great work John! I understand that Ted will be flying the first prototype at ThunderThrust in Chatham

You are doing the hand launch.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Another mould made, just have to trim the master and get it bolted to the inside of the fuselage and that task is finished. The panel lines came out nice and crisp. Just a handfull of moulds left to do and that will be it.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

I've hung up my reno hammer and saw for the rest of the year, so back at it. Yesterday, mounted the vertical fin and rudder in the parting boards, two coats of gelcoat. Today, applying the surface veil and matting. Tomorrow, the other sides will be prepped and started. After these are done, only five more parts to be moulded.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Me too Brent, it's been a long time coming as they say. The masters are now ready to mould up the opposite side. Very happy with the results so far.
