Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Things have moved along slowly but steadily. I'm in the process of applying the polyester resin to the main fuse section, the last colour coat has been applied and the wet sanding begun. Just the top and sides have been done so far, but once wet sanded with 320 grit, I will flip the plug over and do the bottom. You can see the difference in the wet sanded area on the top right surface where the finish is duller. Once done, I'll scribe in the main panel lines.

The tail cone stinger turned out better than I could have hoped for, comparing it to photos, it looks pretty correct.

The tail cone stinger. I figured out why the pics get stretched, now to edit the others.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

The top and sides are wet sanded to 320 grit, the surfaces are really smooth. Flipped it over this afternoon, did some sanding of bondo and along the sides where the polyester resin had stopped to make the transition smooth.
After some minor tune ups of the raw bondo, I applied two coats of tinted polyester resin, which, because it gave a glossy finish, I could easily see some minor deformities that will need some touch up.
With the whole main section now one colour, it certainly looking pretty big...... 😎

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Well, found a couple of photo's that show the rear area of the bottom of the fuselage better than the drawings that I have, and I have a few..... Anyway, you can't really argue with an actual photo so I got to it. I redefined the area, then using my Dura Grit 60 grit sanding block, sanded the valley flat along the marks that defined the new contour. Then re shaped the nacelles to blend them in. Applied a couple of coats of tinted resin. Then compared this new look to the photos, not perfect, but getting there. I will have to add some bondo to the valley surface between the nacelles which will widen the area and make the fuselage a bit deeper, which is always good.

Since the IPad only allows one photo at a time, here they are,

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

After the resin is applied and getting a good look at the new contours, I can see the valley surface is still too narrow and deep past the vent fairings

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Thanks for the offer Peter, I am hoping to keep the airframe as light as possible, so I'm planning on using a single turbine in the 36 lb thrust range, perhaps a KingTech. I'm not going to purchase the turbine until after the model is pretty much built, this way I will get the most up to date version.

After I placed spacers in the valley, I filled the void with bondo and sanded it smooth, I think it's the best that I can get with the info I have. But it does look better and I gained a little more interior space. The nacelle edge on the left needs a little bit more contouring as it is a little too pronounced where it meets the valley, but other than that, it'll be a wet sanding weekend. 😎
