By 12:20 a.m. last night, I finished wet sanding and mapping out the panel lines on the canopy section and the turtle deck. Turned out pretty good, used drawings and photos to get the right placement and perspectives for the cockpit. Tonight I'll get them scribed. The black canopy windows are just paper templates. The windows are flat sheet, so no vacuum moulding mould needed, but the observers windows are curved, so a simple mould will be made for those. However, depending on the thickness of the fiberglass, I may make windows that can be inserted in the window opening from within and a small flange will retain the window in the framework.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

On the topic of the landing gear struts, I was thinking of making them out of carbon fibre with a brass tube insert for the lower strut to fit into. Also, mould in the aluminum pivot trunion at the top where the pivot shaft comes out of the retract unit. I cannot recall if any other manufacture had tried this method.

Any thoughts guys?

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

Just updating the decals, need some help. There is a white stencilled section jus behind the radome on the right side of the anti-glare painted section. I've searched my books and photos, cannot identify what was indicated there.

Also, on the top of the wings, on either side of the no step lines, they have the NO STEP on one side of the line, but I cannot make out clearly what was directly on the other side of the line. I'm guessing it might indicate CAUTION, but that is only a guess.

Any help would be appreciated.

If anyone knows of an illustration that shows what the various stencils indicate for the Arrow, I am willing to pay for it or a copy of one. It would help out tremendously.

Looking good John.

Hey Maddog.. what happened to the one you used to own? Did you sell it?

Im just wondering about the difference in size between the one Maddog owned and the one your building John.

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

The scale of mine is 1/8th, which by complete chance is the same scale as the model Arrows that were used in the movie.

Yes, I sold it but was going to build another, (I am hoping to get one of John's fuse's if he sell them) I believe Johns is 1/8 scale as well but alot more to scale and way more detail added. After the fuse (to me) the next big challenge is the wing's airfoil then the retract as they shorten when retracted to fit into the wing. Here's what an 1/8 Arrow look in size. Go John Go! maddog

Re: Re-starting Avro Arrow build

The vertical fin that was made in 1999, roughly, had a slight wrap in the leading edge section. So, not wanting to make another, and knowing this item is being made into a mould, decided to cut notches with the radial arm saw on both side of the offending area. Mixed up expoxy with cabosil filler and filled in the grooves. Then clamped two lengths of aluminum L shaped strips on either side of the leading edge. Checked the leading edge and it is now very straight, as it should be.

After it cured, I then applied 1.8 oz fine weave fiberglass cloth to both sides with epoxy and filler, should keep the fin straight for now. I've been using old credit cards as an epoxy spreader when applying the cloth in the past. But didn't gave one, so I had these Bondo body filler spreaders and gave them a try. Wow, what a difference, they work fantastic. Plus they are in three sizes, to finish off the spreading, to remove excess epoxy, the larger 4" does a great job. You can get them at CTC or Princess Auto where they and the bondo is quite a bit less expensive, for the same product.
