Need LiPo Help...

Hey folks...

I'm really new to the world of RC.

After talking to a rep from Traxxas earlier this year at a local trade show, I finally decided it was time for me to jump in head first.

Anyways, a couple weeks ago I bought the following gear:
Traxxas E-Revo Brushless
(2) Traxxas LiPo 3S 25C 5000mAh batteries
and a Traxxas EZ-Peak plus charger.

So last night I decided to charge the batteries for the first time.
Balance charged the first one ... completed in about 40mins.
No problems or issues.
Went to charge the 2nd one, and the charger timed out after 2hrs (by default) before reaching completion.
Two cells reached 4.2V, while the 3rd only made it to 3.88.
It seemed to only be charging at like 0.3-0.5A for most of the time.

Any ideas or suggestions as to what the issue might be?
...or is this a normal characteristic for Lipo batteries?

Aren't all 3 cells supposed to be charged equally? Hence "balance" charging?
Also, since the battery is rated at 11.1V...isn't 4.2 (by 3) a little high?

Any help would be great appreciated.

Re: Need LiPo Help...

The 11.2 is a nominal voltage number. The actual reading of a fully charged lipo should be about 4.2 volts per cell. When you put a load on it (hit the throttle) in a fully charged state it should only drop to the nominal voltage figure ie 11.2 for your 3S

The cell that will not come up could be dead/weak or may just need another cycle. Some liipos I own tell you to cycle them from full to aobut 25% drained and back again about three times when you first get it. Do this at a low amperage setting. If it still won't come to 4.2 after that then I would say it is a bad cell.

Electric flying is pretty much seeing how close to a dead short you can run without setting it on fire.

Re: Need LiPo Help...

Okay cool.

I figured there may be some sort of break-in process for these batteries, but wasn't positive. Thought it would be best to come on here and ask for advice from the experts.

I'm hoping there isn't a defective cell right from a brand new box.
I'll run the cycling process as you suggested tomorrow and see what the results are.
