Tail gear question

Ok heli gods I have another good question. I recently switched to a DFC head on my 550. I figured since I am changing that out I would change all the gears out for the sake of gaining some experience since I am recent to heli's. I took apart the casing that contains 2 bearings (opposite end of the tail rotor), and they seemed find so I closed everything back up and when I manually turned the gear that connects with the auto gear it didn't seem extremely easy to turn. I figured I might not have seated the bearings into the grooves that are meant for them in the case. Anyway, I ordered some new ones, installed them, and it seems about the same. I took off the tail rotor assembly, it spins freely and easily, I confirmed the torque tube shaft and the bearing in which it spins in the middle of the boom spins easily and freely, so the only part offering any resistance is the gear assembly block that contains the 2 bearings and the gear they get mounted on. I put everything together, and just hand spun the blade. It works find, but the head on my 600 takes a much longer time to stop turning then the 550 with the new bearings, gears, etc.

Is this normal for a new build and requires a runup to get everything seated perfect?

Re: Tail gear question

I'd give it a hover or two and check everything over again for reassurance. A break-in period will definately make things change and settle into place. Not a very technical answer for you but I like to keep things as simple as possible. Also the 600 has slightly more mass and will spin longer regardless. Assuming everything is in good working order.

Re: Tail gear question

My question is what are you comparing it to? Is this a brand new build?

Re: Tail gear question

Bearing alignment can be an issue. When you assemble cases that contain bearings always tighten in a inner screw first pattern. Tighten each screw a bit at a time until they are all tight. Never tighten one screw fully tight and then go to the next loose one because that can cause misalignment when the rest of the screws get tightened. Unless a bearing requires preload all bearings should spin freely unless something else else is rubbing or dragging within the assembley. Look in other places your source of drag can be elsewhere
