I'm more a fan of the Carden design where 8-32 bolts hold the gear onto the plane and screw into threaded holes in the oak rails with no nuts on the inside. Seems to be the perfect strength to have the bolts pull out of the threaded Oak rails before any damage is done to the motorbox. The key is the oak and 8-32 bolts.

I'm sure the plate idea would work great also - one would just need to perfect the strength so that it breaks at the right stress level - not too soon and not to late.

The downside of the Carden method is you have once accident before you have to go to 10-32 bolts or put nuts on the inside and then it looses it's effectiveness.

How long have you used this system? Have you ever had an unexpected failure ie. good landing but the plate breaks anyways? I fly most often from a grass field, pretty smooth but it is NOT a pool table LOL. Should I be concerned using this system? Anybody else have experience with this approach - I'd be interested in your opinion.
Just one season and I so recall hearing a crack one day when I brought the plane in towards the pit and didnt turn enough before the rut of a water pipe ( sod farm hazards, lol ). I never payes attention to that but within a dozen flights the result was noticeable, plate breaking up and fuse ok.

Not sure how long the idea has been around but I am sticking witb it. I agree with Trevor, the Carden way is smart from the factory.

Re: Dalton Extra 300 ML build

Having pulled my gear (Carden) out last year, I had good success (so far) by putting an oak plug into the rail and re tapping. Needs to be cross grain though so basic oak dowel won't work. I used a plug maker to cut some from 3/4 oak stock. Held up so far and no damage to the motor box when the gear departed the first time.

Nice clean repair Gordon, looks good. And a beautiful plane.

Re: Dalton Extra 300 ML build

Thanks for the input guys! I've decided to open up the other side, install some oak rails and drill/tap for 8-32 bolts. I'll have to put some bushings in the landing gear because the stock Dalton design used 10-32 allen head with lock nuts.

Ain't that the pot calling the kettle black LOL

Well it's been too bloody cold and snowy to do any flying so I've got to scratch that "itch" in the shop LOL. I've got a closet full of amazing kits to choose from but it might be an old Graupner "Cosmic Wing", a Yellow Aircraft Zero, a Skyshark ME109, an old Dave Platt Zero, a funfly Dynaflight PT-19..... Sheesh, I need to win a lottery and retire

Re: Dalton Extra 300 ML build

Thanks Mr. Pot!

I'm picking up the oak rails from my dad's shop today so I should be able to get back at the Dalton tonight. Probably one more night to straighten out and mount the gear and then I can start repairing the wheel pants.

Re: Dalton Extra 300 ML build

I decided to modify the other side of the landing gear plate while the plane was in the shop so I opened up the other side, removed the aluminum angle and I glued in the oak sticks (3/4" by 5/8" by 7" long) on both sides. Put in a couple of screws through the side of the motor box for good measure!

I removed the wheels, axles and the cuffs off the landing gear. Wow this thing is BENT! On top of it being spread out, there is more than two inches of twist I am really lucky that I didn't rip out the whole bottom of the mtor box!
While taking the wheels off the axle I noticed that I already had a pretty loose fit between the axle and the plastic wheel hub. I guess it is time to start looking at a better brand of wheel ie. more than just plastic hubs! I drilled out the hub and glued in a length of brass tubing (just like on the 100cc Wild Hare rebuild thread).

Question: If I put it in a vice and manage to bent it back into shape will the gear be more suceptible to bending out of shape again in the future??
