I have 7 or 8 72 Mhz transmitters, so I am not about to change too quickly. I also use the HK synthesized Rxs for my smaller, cheaper planes and have had no issues. I expect that the time will come when some entity decides we don't need the frequencies any more and they get reassigned to another service (industry, or whatever) I will have to switch. For now I am comfortable where I am, and having observed a few 2.4Ghz planes go in with their owners yelling "I got nuthin' " I have been chary of getting involved.

I have no doubt that all the observed or perceived problems will be dealt with and explained as the technology improves and there will be no excuse to stay away from it.

If I was were just starting out, I would most likely be part of the 2.4 crowd. I just have too much invested at the this time to make a sudden jump. As I said, 7 or 8 transmitters and probably 20 or more receivers, so replacing that would strain the budget a bit; and then what can you do with the old ones? They are starting to get hard to even give away.

I still fly 10 ch JR/PCM stuff in my jets. I don't have any intention of changing anytime soon.

Re: FM Radios...are you still using them?

I still use a Futaba 9C and 8U super, like others i have thousands invested in receivers for these two radios. The 8U is still my all time favorite, it just feels right. I recently bought an 8J to play around with 2.4 and s.bus before I invest in a high end 2.4 tx, no issues whatsoever. S.bus is sweet, HV receivers are almost a necessity given the way batteries are going, I'll be upgrading my whole fleet soon.... Probably with a 14sg.

Re: FM Radios...are you still using them?

I know exactly how you feel I had a ton of planes on 72 and I was reluctant to change for more than one reason ,it's been 4 years now and I still have a couple of planes with no receivers . My plan was to get a 2.4 radio and slowly switch over, thing is after installing my first 2.4 radio it was like getting my first home computer at first I resisted, then I tried it, now I am lost without it. after flying 2.4 I realized the risk was much greater with 72 so I no longer wanted to use it. just like driving my 58 ford after wearing seat belts for the past 30 years ,I feel uneasy driving that car now ,I never did before when cars never had seat belts. I only know one thing for sure when or if you change you would not want to change back.

Re: FM Radios...are you still using them?

As has been stated, if I were starting out in the hobby right now, there is no question that I would go to 2.4g
But I am comfortable with the 72mhz gear I have been using and in fact have bought some good used 72mhz gear recently. It works for me and I have no reason to switch to 2.4
Each has its own pros and cons and each individual will use whichever works best for them.

I usually fly alone, but the times when I fly with others (which seems to be more and more frequently) they are all on 2.4 so there is no issue with interference. I should note that I am in rural BC with no MAAC field within a reasonable distance so I just go out in the Chilcotin Plateau and fly to my heart's content on my 'old' 72 mhz gear.
It's all good as long as we are out flying and having a good time.

Re: FM Radios...are you still using them?

We all went through this same thing when they introduced narrow band 72mhz. Seems these changes come every 10 or so years to keep us buying new stuff. Perhaps I will skip the 2.4 one & wait for the next fad. Should be due in another year or two...
