Back in September of 1999, the prolific and mechanically astute Mr Lee typed two pages which included knowing "...several sources for timing belts but none of my catalogs list an 8" length belt any wider than 3/8. The belt may have been made to special order..."
The bulk of the letter comprises a nostalgic memoir which includes: "Hong Kong brings back some old war time memories as I was there quite a few times right after WW II. During the war I was an Army Corps pilot stationed first in India and then in Burma (Myitkyina). We flew the 'hump' to various air fields in China transporting Chinese troops, bombs, gasoline, etc. On VJ day we were transferred to Kaingwan Air Base in Shanghai to take over the base from the Japanese...
"One of the tours was to Hong Kong. We landed there at Kowloon at what was then a British fighter strip barely long enough to get into. The British would not give us gasoline for the return flight so we set up a gas dump over at Canton. [Once] on take off both engines died which caused some moments of panic. You can really move around in the cockpit fast checking for fuel on forward tanks, boost pumps on, mixture full rich, etc. etc..."
Must've been a slow day over at RCM!
For the rest of Mr Lee's story, two pages of stunning prose bearing R/C Modeler Magazine's letterhead and his signature are complimentary with:
Vintage Dubro Prop Drive Unit which, with a "Webra .61 Blackhead and 15% nitro" can, according to "Performance Tests by Scale R/C Modeller magazine" drive:
20-8 prop, max rpm 5600, idle 1000
22-8 prop, max rpm 5000, idle 800
24-8 prop, max rpm 4000, idle 700
20-10 prop, max rpm 5100, idle 1000
22-10 prop, max 4700, idle 900
24-10 prop, max 3800, idle 700
Beyond those, you'll be idling no more.
"Flying: Excellent for 1/4 to 1/2 scale models. For best performance, your wing loading should be approximately 24 oz. or less, although planes weighing 28 lbs. have been flown successfully with heavier wing loadings...To date, many of Bud Nosen's kits have flown successfully with this Unit. Don Anderson's Gere Sport (Nosen kit) can perform loops, rolls, inverted flight and 4x8 point rolls..."
(I guess only accidental 3D maneuvers existed in those days...)
"The engine with the large prop beating the air is reminiscent of some of the older aircraft engines...a very low realistic sound..."
"Engines larger than .61 are definitely not recommended. Over speeding the unit only shortens belt life while gaining very little performance...Your engine should turn about 12000 rpm for optimum performance..."
Gear ratio: 2 1/2 to 1
Size without engine: 7 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 3 3/4
Firewall to back of prop: 5 5/8"
Weight: 1 lb 13 oz
Weight w/ engine and prop: approx 3 lbs
Ball bearings: 4
Engines: any .60 or .61 two-stroke. Schneurle ported engines will give the least performance due to their low torque ratings.
Pumps: okay, but recess in firewall may be required
Belts: up to 6 hours if unit is properly set up
(Due to the plethora of belts, heck, I'd experiment with a .75 two-stroke!)
And now, for the rest of MY story.
Nosiree, Mr Lee, I did not despair. On a blazing hot autumn Saturday morning I went forth on bus and underground from Sai Kung to Kowloon's mom-and-pop light-maintenance-and-tools market area to venture forth among the diesel-fume-aromatic district's greasy-and-dust-laden v-belt shops.
Two hours later, lo and behold. Same-hour service -- in a language I knew not -- produced ten custom-cut toothed belts plus an embossed yet undecipherable business card.
I joyfully returned to Sai Kung to sip a cool schooner or two under the local publican's A/C.
Vintage and exceedingly rare. Very good and complete condition. I purchased this item used fifteen years ago. It's been in storage since. Willing to trade for station wagon or large hatchback.
