Exclamation runway grass seed

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hello everyone!

I have a 400 X 100ft runway here on my 100acre property that I use for my radio control planes.
Last year I just kept it cut down with the bushhog on the back of my tractor but this spring I am going to grade it down and make it smooth and level and make it into a really nice airfeild! I have heard about diffrent kinds of grass seed that people like to use for their rc airplane runways but I would like to know what people are using?

Whats the best brand of grass seed for a runway and were can I buy it?

Re: runway grass seed

School yard blend.

Go to your local county, of municipality. Ask them what, and where they get the blend for the schoolyards in your jurisdiction.
They get a custom blend, for drought servival, high traffic, durability, and slow growth.
Also available in a 50lb bag. I used it years ago on my acreage.

Hope this helps,

Re: runway grass seed

Dale is correct, go see a local expert.

Whether they are at the local School Board or Golf course doesn't matter they will know the local soil and weather patterns and be able to give you some real solid advice.

Good Luck!

Re: runway grass seed

We used clover. It does not grow very high, so not a lot of cutting neededand spreads easily. It made for a smooth runway.

Re: runway grass seed

Clover is always green, even in a drought which seems to be every year now.

I like the sun mix from HomeHardware's bulk section, the stuff that has more Kentucky Bluegrass. You can keep it short and it doesn't require loads of water.

Re: runway grass seed

Go to your nearest golf club, if there are more than one, go to the best.
Ask the ground keeper what is best for your area.
He will be proud to give you advice. There is a lot of knowledge required
to keep a golf course GREEN.

Re: runway grass seed

Pretty much depends on the soil you have. Here in sunny Tillsonburg we have sandy soil. Our field just turned brown and died last year. This year we are going to try the Long Point mix which is supposed to be the cat's meow.
