cost of clover seed is one thing. Clover is not cheap seed per pound and also need a fair amount per 1000 sq. feet. I have used a seed mix called eco turf. BAsicly a blend of all fescues and rye grass, with no kentucy ble. Very dought resistant and also tends to be very fine so makes for a nice smooth surface is base ground is well prepared. Some companies to look for grass seed from are Speere Seeds, Pick seed to name a few. No a big fan of what CTC and Home hardware etc. sell per bagged. The bulk seed bins tend to be ok. IF you know the soil type you have on the field you fly from I can get give you some good blends that will work. Good grass seed is not cheap.

Re: runway grass seed

I guess we're lucky, in our area clover takes over the second year regardless of what (if anything) we seed. We cut a flying field out of a smooth alfalfa field and by the end of the second year it was 90% clover.

That said though, clover makes for a nice flying field.

Re: runway grass seed

Call a local sod company and make a deal for broken bags or surplus seed mix...About a dollor a pound works best and seed in may, half of what you think and seed again in the fall..Soil PH is everything as well as available water...Lots of water the first week for germination is best...Fertilizer is another big question...We mow three acres of beautiful field...its the pot holes from ground hogs, racoons, that make extra work...Good luck

Re: runway grass seed

Another trick to a thick lush lawn is to cut it often. I know it's hard to do at clubs because everyone wants to fly.
At my field when the grass is very active I cut it 3 times a week. This also eliminates excess clippings which turn brown and look like sh!t.
Also produces a strong bed of roots.

I'm really too fussy about the whole thing but I enjoy that time to myself.

Re: runway grass seed

Best investment ive made for my field has been a pull behind brushes up the clippings along with any other twigs and crap that blow onto the field. I dump the bag of clippings for feed for the goats and miniature horse we have. This raker does an amazing job.
