I set the settings for both the Plush and the Delux the same I think. I manually programed both for a 4 cell battery, timings are the same, I believe the low shut off voltage is the same but since the battery(s) are just off the charger, that should not matter for the tests.
The throttle is set at 100% on the transmitter.

Neither of the ESC's seem to get even warm so they are not being strained.

I have another new 30 amp Plush, I might set it up and do a test on a single EDF unit instead of pairing them and see what the readings are. If it's in the settings somewhere, I certainly would like to use the 30 amp ones, two of them weigh the same as just one of the Delux ESC's and 2.10 oz is another savings in weight.

Every little bit helps.

Once I get this plane covered, I'll post a picture, it'll still be pink though for the test flight.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

If in doubt, you could just reset the ESC's to factory default settings, then you will know if it is one of the settings that is off. I suspect it is the lipo cell count setting causing the problem. In factory default, it will be auto and shouldn't cause any reduction in power with a fully charged battery.

I'll give that a try tonight, thanks for the ideas.

Yes, I'll let you know when the maiden will be.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

I checked the Plush ESC's using the program card and the settings I had wanted did not save, they were in the auto detect for the cell count. So I selected 4 cells and I changed the timing from low to mid.
Fired up the EDF's and it registered 100 watts more than before, but still 100 watts less than the Delux setup.
Plus, this time the controllers got a lot warmer. I suspect this has to do with the timing change.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

The last vacuforming mold is made and the part fits pretty good. Now it's ready to have the 3/4oz fiberglass cloth applied. After I finish this one, I'll have three of these planes, but all are different, kinda neat.....
The access hatch is fairly large and can be larger if you have big hands. There will be a 1/32" plywood plate added to the floor of the fuselage interior so velcro can be used to hold the batteries in place. I'll start with two 2 cell 3300 mah batteries in series to act as a 4 cell. They will sit flat on the bottom of the fuselage, one in each duct.
The ESC's will sit forward in the intakes so cooling will certainly not be an issue. The wires in the third picture will be trimmed to length so I'll save an oz or two.
Also working on my new fiberglass Arrow and my Mig-17C, going to put in a ChangeSun 70mm 12 bladed EDF in it. I have over thirty of them so I guess I had better use one to get some knowledge with them. Figure I'd use the Mega EDF5 cell motor and see how many cells I can actually use before it blows up.
Anyway, here are the pic's I mentioned that I'd post.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

Here are some of my planes I am trying to get ready for Ottawa, I need a bigger workshop.... the wings and fin for the fiberglass Arrow are made, just not enough space on the work bench.
Oh, I also have the red Mig15 and the Golden Hawk F-86 Sabre.....and I just got in the Sukhio SU-37 Berkut, it won't be ready though.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

The covering has started. I first do the wings, top and bottom which has to be done at the same time or the wing will really warp. If you do only one side and let the Varathane dry, it shrinks the 3/4 oz cloth enough to distort the surface. This happened to the vertical fin on my pusher Arrow. Oh, use only the water based Varathane Diamond Coat. Varathane makes another version that is solvent based, eats the foam.

After this first coat dries hard, You sand the edges at the trailing edge of the wing to literally cut the excess cloth off. Gives you a very nice edge. Tomorrow night I'll apply the cloth to the rest of the airframe, the vertical fin and the two control surfaces.

After a few coats of Varathane with a light sanding with 220 grit between each coat, the cloth weave will be totally filled and you'll have a very smooth surface. Then I will get all the plastic forms attached and get it setup for the big test flight. If all goes well, it'll be late next week sometime.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

The prototype is built, pretty pink and white. I'll shoot some paint on it shortly. Came out weighing 59 oz ready to fly. Was hoping for a bit less without the paint, oh well, such is life. Prototypes apparently always come out heavy for some reason or other. Almost half the weight is the fans, motors, batteries and two ESC's so the airframe alone is heavier than I would have liked. We shall see if it has a big affect tomorrow afternoon at the field.
For those who want to see it fly, I am going to hopefully be at the Toronto field at between 5 and 6. My cell is 416-553-3557 for anyone who wants to check with me before coming out.

Two more Arrows and I'll have almost the whole fleet......
