I have thought of that and the costs. My scale fiberglass Arrow uses a single 89mm Hoaye fan and I get early 2200 watts of power off of a 7 cell battery arrangement. But the space inside this foam version is too small due to the thickness of the foam. It's even a tight fit in the fiberglass version. But looking at the power from a single 70 mm unit, it would make things somewhat simple, single ESC, fan and motor. I wanted to try a twin and these HK Dr Mad Thrust proved that they do work well and the only bigger cost is having two ESC's.
I have been in touch with RC/Lander and have already recieved my shipment of 50 mm EDF's with the motors, identical to the Dr. Mad Thrust because they make them.
But, I am also waiting for a shipment of their 64 mm versions, these units allege to produce just over 1000 watts of power on 4 cells. I can squeeze two of these units into the space in the fuselage. So, these units might be the high end for power in this model. Oh, the cost for one unit is more than twice the cost of two 50 mm units. Power costs money apparently.....so I'll wait and see how to do the next version if there is one. I'll have to make new molds for thrust tubes every time I change power systems.

As for your question Leadfoot, very soon, I'm going out to pick up the required sheets of foam to make six or eight kits. I also have to modify the manual as it presently pertains to the pusher version. And yes, it will cost a bit more than the pusher as there are now fiberglass parts that need to be made and some more vacuform parts, etc.....

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

After a long weekend of lots of work and little relaxation and dodging the rain showers, I found time to put 90% of the decals and striping on the model, RL202. I will get the rest on this week in time for the Toronto R/C club's fun fly this coming Saturday.
I made the molds for the wing strakes and vacuum formed the parts, it needed that little extra detail to really look the part.
Even though it's "just" a big foamie, looks pretty good.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

Well, I certainly learned something Saturday. Don't use magnets to hold down a hatch if it's part of the intake duct system. When the fans are spinning, the negative suction is plenty to hold the hatch in place, but here is the problem. When I bungee launched the model, I didn't have the motors at full throttle at the start of the launch and the now positive pressure of the air being rammed in blew the hatch clean off. This in itself isn't all that bad, what is bad, I have the receiver velcroed onto the bottom of the hatch itself. Fortunately, the receiver came off and stayed with the plane. Unfortunately, one wire pulled out of the receiver, the darn throttle wire that goes to the ESC's and of course, the battery power to the receiver. Yep, it became a fast free flight glider......all we could do was watch. I have the video, but I'll save it for when my ego is healed.
Fortunately, the wings stayed level, more or less, and it glided into the field with very little damage, all cosmetic and it's been repaired. Mostly, it was getting the mud off before it stained the white finish.
So, back to the workbench last night and I designed a simple "traditional" hold down system, two dowels at the front and a single nylon screw at the back.
I think I'll wait until Ottawa before trying again.
