This stuff is great John- I use two lengths (doubled up) for up to a 50 lb. pull.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

Hi Tom, that is the exact product I ordered to replace the bungee that would launch the composite Arrow, and I got 35 lbs of pull on the single strand which I was very satisfied with. The replacement product, same colour code and all turned out to be only 3/8" in diameter and thin walled. I gave it a test and doubled it up. Stretched it out until I figured it was going to break, got only 13 lbs of pull. Very disappointed. Called the company, the guy was very supportive, offered a full refund. Wants me to attend the company office in Concord to test their two next stronger cords. So, perhaps tomorrow afternoon, I'll be going to Concord.

In the mean time, I installed fixed landing gear in my old battered foam Arrow, applied paint to the repairs from the collision with the bungee stake. Looks pretty good ........

I'll apply the extra decals and weapons bay striping after the first flight. 😎

I know I will be building another foam Arrow shortly for myself, going to try and squeeze in two RC Lander 64 mm fans, give 1000+ watts on a 4 cell 3300 mah battery. If so, I'll be hot wire cutting a thicker scale wings, etc. Retracts will be a definite. I should look at the composite Arrow and redesign the composite wing for drop in retracts too. Oh boy, too many planes, not enough time 😏

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

So they've changed the specs?- strange. I think the silver cord has the highest strength, that's what I got last time.
So many Arrows, so little time lol- you're a busy guy John! If you were making one for a single 90 mm fan I'd be very interested (as would others, i.e. Eric).

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

Silver used to be the strongest, but the guy told me they now have a gold colour which is stronger than the silver.

My composite Arrow is a single 90 mm but the $600.00 price tag seems to scare people.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

A bit scarey, but still... Despite having followed your Arrow builds over the years I must've missed this one- can you provide details John?- here or PM me.
I must say though, we're about to do a 20k kitchen reno so this would be at least a year away...

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

In size, it is identical to the foam Arrow, but, it is very scale and panel lined. Because it was designed back when we were using nicad batteries and our 90 mm systems were still in the 1000 watt range on a good day, no landing gear was designed to be installed.

It's a bungee launcher, single 90 mm Hoaye fan is included, flies on 7 or 8 cells. It is a kit, but nearly all fiberglass.

The post for it is on the forum, it's quite long, for a long time it was the most viewed post. All of the information is there.

Here is a picture of the prototype

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

Would it be possible to modify it for retracts?

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

The nose gear wouldn't be much of a problem. It's the main gear that is the real challenge, even if you relocate the gear location further back to the max thickness, it's still too thin for any off the shelf retracts you coukd buy and install. If you wanted to mount them in the fuse, again, there isn't much spare room. And it woukd look very out of scale.

Re: Avro Arrow foamie EDF Conversion

Thinking of redoing the length of the nose gear after testing it. Tried to replicate the models stance when sitting in the bungee dolly as the take offs were always nice. If the model "jumps" into the air, I'll cut the wire coil off and try and attaching the oleo to the stud that is left.

But, I might need to rip out the plate as that is the only way to access the retaining wheel collar.
