The Calgary Miniature Pylon Racing Association wrapped up it's Winter Racing Program for the 2012 / 2013 season.
The club raced two classes this past season, Club 20 and Electric Formula one. The Club 20 airplanes have been flown by this club for many years with Electric racing taking off over the last 2 years.
Roy Andrassy organized the winter racing. Roy's passion for racing is evident when hardly wind or snow stops him from holding a contest, the rest of us are not always as eager in all of these conditions but once we start and the adrenaline flows seldom is there any whimpering about conditions. It's easy to see why Roy is one of the top racers in the world since seldom are conditions too bad to fly any type of racing plane.
This season we saw 8 Club 20 racers and 9 EF-1 get together for 11-4 heat races per class held since last September. That's 88 heats flown in total through an Alberta winter. Calgary has developed over many years of racing a very efficient method that minimizes the helpers required, essentially we run a race with 2 helpers that could arguably be done with only one helper, if your club is interested in how to do this let us know, it may be written down somewhere.
For the final race Al and Kevin Umbach, top racers from Edmonton joined in along with the regular crew from Calgary and region, Al brought a nicely done Proud Bird, Kevin with a Shoestring in standard colouring. These guys are seasoned racers and although new to EF-1, have picked it up without pause. I can see an opportunity in Edmonton for some racing, I am sure Al and Kevin would be please to help.
Having said this I am not sure Edmonton flyers albeit a couple are as adept at racing, many of the Edmonton flyers are perhaps too old to keep up to the flying speeds Calgary has become noted for.
See the CPPRA site http://www.cppra.org for the results of the racing, and also of note is the Calgary race May 25 & 26. This is for EF-1, 424 Class Quickee (Thunder Tigre Pro 40 Engine, if enough entries), 426 Class Quickee, (Nelson and Jett engines).
